About the Role
The OpenAI Foundation is seeking a Head of the Econ Lab to lead a team in exploring the economic implications of transformative AI. This role involves managing a portfolio of research bets, funding initiatives, and building collaborations to address the economic challenges and opportunities presented by advanced AI systems.
Responsibilities
- Define the lab's operating thesis for understanding the economics of transformative AI and potential policies.
- Build and manage the portfolio of research bets, converting proposals into fundable initiatives.
- Hire and lead a small team of economists and thinkers with complementary expertise.
- Determine the appropriate vehicle for each pilot/experiment (internal hire, grant, fellowship, etc.).
- Establish a cadence for communication and knowledge sharing among independently run bets.
- Manage relationships with economists, policy entrepreneurs, and institution builders in the field.
- Create decision artifacts for leadership to provide confidence in the portfolio without direct proposal review.
Requirements
- Economics or policy background grounded in real-world application, not solely academic.
- Ability to distinguish compelling proposals from good ones and make difficult funding decisions.
- Comfort managing multiple unrelated bets simultaneously without immediate theoretical resolution.
- Skill in communicating complex work to diverse audiences, including AGI-focused and traditional economists.
- Experience navigating politically sensitive or heavily scrutinized work.
