About the Role
The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) functions under the supervision of the Registered Nurse to carry out direct patient care responsibilities. All patient care team members are expected to meet patient needs, learn new skills for quality care and customer service, and promote a cooperative working relationship through effective communication, honesty, respect, and sensitivity to age-specific needs and cultural differences.
Responsibilities
- Performs general patient care duties as appropriate to ages served, including assisting with personal hygiene, responding to call lights, ensuring patient comfort and safety, turning/moving/transferring patients, assisting with meals, recording nutritional intake, assisting with admissions/discharges/transfers/transports, orienting new patients, organizing and prioritizing patient care tasks, assisting with post-mortem care, and performing sitter/close observation responsibilities.
- Reports and records delegated patient data (e.g., vital signs, pain score, oxygen saturation, height, weight, intake and output), collects other patient data as assigned, performs selected patient care procedures and treatments, acts as first responder in emergency situations, sets up and maintains O2 therapy equipment, labels specimens accurately, operates nursing unit equipment, and completes unit maintenance activities such as stocking supplies and cleaning equipment.
- Follows all unit, department, and Medical Center policies and procedures, maintains confidentiality, adheres to House and Telephone Standards, follows safety and infection control policies, completes annual safety training, supports the Medical Center's mission and goals, participates in unit staff meetings and educational programs, contributes to quality assurance and improvement processes, maintains a clean and safe work environment, starts work on time, follows guidelines for paid time off, complies with dress code, provides unsolicited assistance to team members, uses appropriate chain of command, and performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of working hands-on in a healthcare environment.
- Ability to work effectively within a team.
- Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description.
- Willingness to be taught/learn new skills.
- Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition and subtraction).
- Ability to organize and effectively set priorities.
- Ability to carry out duties of first responder in emergency situations.
- Successful completion of Medical Center Patient Care Assistant training.
- Basic computer skills.
- Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
