About the Role

The Moxy Captain is responsible for the soul of the hotel, ensuring guests have a seamless and memorable experience. This role focuses on bringing the Moxy brand experience to life for every guest and Crew Member, from check-in to check-out, while also driving revenue through food and beverage offerings and community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Set up an environment where guests can serve themselves in a thoughtful, intuitive manner.
  • Ensure the sensory experience of the hotel (music, lighting, scent) is as it should be.
  • Build relationships in the community and bring exciting events to The Now.
  • Construct a property atmosphere so guests feel like they are seamlessly moving through the hotel.
  • Drive revenue through a distinctive approach to beverage and food offering and promotion.
  • Create unique guest experiences in a vibrant environment.
  • Maintain a smooth operation behind the scenes to validate that the business is in order.
  • Verify that brand-specific service programs are in place and executed against.
  • Provide timely feedback to management and hourly associates on service and operational standards.
  • Manage the flow of labor between departments to achieve profitability goals and stay within staff budget guidelines.
  • Create and support clear lines of responsibility, including coverage and oversight throughout the day.
  • Help hotel team prepare for QA audits.
  • Review and follow-up on property Guest Voice scores and other social media travel site comments.
  • Act as a project manager for the execution of capital improvements.
  • Maintain a visible presence all around the property to verify that public spaces, grounds, work and kitchen areas are clean and safe.
  • Manage the implementation of major brand standards.
  • Delegate responsibilities for operations and projects to appropriate associates.
  • Monitor beverage and food forecasting and par levels to reduce waste and maximize profitability.
  • Establish and leverage local vendor relationships that align with the brand’s positioning and support beverage and food operational needs.
  • Verify that bar, kitchen, and self-serve retail areas are well organized, inventoried, productive, clean, and safe.
  • Conduct periodic compliance audits with Heart of House associates.
  • Provide coaching on operations and troubleshooting of Micros and other technology components.
  • Manage relationships with decision makers at top accounts.
  • Engage in-house guests and locals to prospect for new sources of business.
  • Collaborate with Area/Regional Marketing & eCommerce Managers to develop and/or sustain marketing and eCommerce strategies for the hotel.
  • Identify opportunities for local partnerships and promotions to drive non-hotel staying business to property.
  • Identify and champion creative local marketing solutions that fit the brand and property needs.
  • Coach and reinforce selling strategies that take advantage of property features.
  • Develop innovative means for capturing new streams of revenue through property amenities.
  • Initiate appropriate proactive independent sales and public relations activities to build awareness and generate demand.
  • Leverage brand-wide social media and other digital channels to promote the hotel, programming and other property features.
  • Work with the Regional Sales office (RSO) to implement sales strategy for the property.
  • Work with Market Sales to establish property sales strategy, goals, and action plans.
  • Participate in the property sales review (PSR).
  • Verify that direct sales staff fully utilize e-tools.
  • Identify key revenue generating stakeholders and customers and communicate information to sales offices.
  • Verify that all national and regional marketing programs are executed well in relevant departments.
  • Participate in and host customer recognition events to drive brand awareness and sales.
  • Understand and leverage sales and marketing advantages over competitor properties within market.
  • Monitor sales strategy with RSO to maintain ongoing effectiveness and compliance.
  • Champion the Moxy brand’s service vision for product and service delivery.
  • Facilitate on property activities that reinforce and enliven the Moxy culture with associates.
  • Actively recruit and hire qualified associates from in and outside the hospitality industry.
  • Understand performance expectations.
  • Build rapport with employees by fostering an environment of open communication and treating all employees fairly.
  • Facilitate cross-training to support associate professional growth and operational excellence.
  • Drive ongoing development of managers.
  • Conduct performance review process for associates.
  • Support recruitment efforts in brand-relevant sourcing channels.
  • Conduct day-to-day Human Resource transactions to support needs of the property.
  • Manage on-property controllable costs associated with rooms, housekeeping, events, and beverage and food operations.
  • Measure, analyze, and communicate property performance using a variety of financial and non-financial reports.
  • Update and communicate profit forecasts to associates/managers.
  • Initiate action to achieve property revenue and profitability goals.
  • Understand how beverage and food product variability can affect profitability and work with management team to maximize revenue generation when product changes.
  • Review and sign off on invoices.
  • Review Property Distribution Summary and Purchase Detail Reports; identify, research, and resolve balance issues.
  • Consolidate reports needed for period-end review.
  • Review property performance on a period basis with Region leadership.
  • Verify compliance with Avendra.
  • Manage the relationship with the revenue management office.
  • Review and work with appropriate revenue management reports.
  • Balance inventory to drive same-day sellouts.
  • Work with property teams to meet or exceed revenue projections.
  • Keep brand leadership team, owners, and above property stakeholders informed of property financial, guest satisfaction, and associate engagement performance.
  • Prepare and present reports for owners and above property leadership using financial/performance data.
  • Conduct property critiques and annual business reviews.
  • Participate in ad hoc owner conference calls and respond appropriately to owner requests.
  • Respond to off-property requests for sales information.
  • Manage e-mail.
  • Manage daily paper mail.
  • Participate in conference calls.
  • Provide follow-up information to Area/Regional leadership and brand team(s).
  • Prepare for Area/Regional Team visits.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in the hotel industry preferred, with prior GM / HM experience in a similar or larger hotel.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a lifestyle, select-service or high-volume city hotel, ideally through pre-opening, new-build or major repositioning.
  • Strong food and beverage, rooms operations, revenue management, human resources and quality assurance capability, including strategic planning, budgeting, SOP development and project management.
  • Ability to build and mobilize the pre-opening leadership team, establish hotel culture, oversee recruitment and training, and deliver operational readiness against the critical path.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a matrix organisation and leverage centralised and Area Team resources.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects and workstreams simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results when faced with complexity, ambiguity and changing timelines.
  • Experience evaluating business trends and risks and implementing strategies that enhance performance while mitigating business concerns.
  • Track record of creating positive and influential owner relationships.
