About the Role

This role will be based in San Francisco, CA. This is the founding data hire. You will build Hubble's data platform from the warehouse layer up, make decisions on architecture, determine processes for managing schema and data models, and work with many stakeholders. The guiding principle is data democratization, aiming for every person at Hubble to be able to answer their own questions. You'll be a peer to Platform Engineering and an embedded consultant to Finance, Product, and Customer Success, thinking about how to present a strong story from data. We expect you to use AI agents as part of how you work.

Responsibilities

Own the transformation layer end-to-end, including defined models across Staging, Warehouse, and Mart, star-schema design, SCD2, and data contracts enforced by tests.
Build the data layer our internal tools run on, with mart tables designed for specific operational workflows behind a generated internal metrics API, owning the mart and API's performance.
Make freshness a commitment by ensuring core data and critical operational metrics are streamed in real time with Apache Iceberg, with monitoring that catches breakage before a stakeholder does.
Instrument the funnels by designing event collection across product surfaces, unified into a customer 360 spanning authentication, usage, and billing.
Assist the Mission Operations group in landing telemetry data from satellites into dashboards and monitoring systems for immediate action.
Automate revenue reconciliation by performing daily comparisons of Stripe Platform billing against Hubble usage, flagging discrepancies before month-end.
Define metrics once, ensuring every number has a canonical definition, an owner, and visible lineage from source to dashboard.
Implement classification in the pipeline, tagging datasets by sensitivity, enforcing retention, masking, and anonymization, and keeping lineage and access logs auditable.
Build for self-service with semantic layers, curated datasets, a data catalog, and documentation.
Choose boring technology, leaning towards buy over build, with a strong opinion on technology choices.

Requirements

7+ years building production data systems, with 2+ years at senior or staff scope owning architecture.
Deep SQL and dimensional modeling knowledge, including star schemas, slowly changing dimensions, and grain discipline.
Experience with dbt (or similar) in production, including model organization, macros, incremental strategies, tests as contracts, and CI.
Cloud data warehouse depth, ideally Redshift (or similar), including distribution and sort keys, vacuum and analyze behavior, workload management, and query optimization.
Proficiency in Python or Scala for specialized pipelines, custom connectors, backfills, and reconciliation jobs.
Experience with event and product analytics instrumentation, including defining tracking plans and building funnel tables.
Understanding of data quality as engineering, including anomaly detection, freshness monitoring, and incident response.
Fluency with AI agents in workflow, with a point of view on their benefits and potential errors.
Experience with high-volume machine-generated data, telemetry, events, or IoT at billions of rows.
Experience with semantic layer and metric definition work.
Experience with streaming or near-real-time ingestion (Kinesis, Kafka, Redpanda) with Apache Iceberg or Pinot.
Experience owning a BI tool as a platform, including permissions, curated collections, and maintenance.
Interest or experience in IoT, satellite systems, telemetry, or geospatial data (preferred).
Experience with billing, usage-based pricing, or revenue reconciliation and recognition workflows (preferred).
Experience with SOC 2 or similar compliance work (preferred).
Open source contributions or public technical writing (preferred).
Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident ('green card holder') as defined by ITAR.
