About the Role

Personal Support Workers (PSWs) are essential in assisting individuals with daily living activities (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (iADLs). This role focuses on providing personalized support that respects client abilities and promotes independence, fostering dignity, enhancing quality of life, and reducing social isolation for seniors and adults with disabilities. Care provided is compassionate, culturally sensitive, inclusive, and responsive to diverse community needs.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver client-centered, culturally competent personal care that promotes dignity and independence.
  • Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as feeding, transfers, bathing, skin care, oral hygiene, toileting, and continence care.
  • Support instrumental activities of daily living (iADLs) including light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, and bulk shopping.
  • Provide medication assistance or reminders in line with policy.
  • Perform delegated tasks as taught by a Regulated Health Professional and in accordance with policies.
  • Observe and document changes in clients’ physical, mental, or cognitive health and report unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Maintain accurate progress notes and communication logs in client files and management software.
  • Communicate and collaborate with caregivers and stakeholders to ensure preferred approaches to care.
  • Respond appropriately to changes in behaviour and escalate to management when needed; work with interdisciplinary teams to support clients.
  • Apply proper food handling, infection prevention, and personal protective equipment practices.
  • Monitor program supplies and report shortages to the Manager.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies following established protocols.
  • Participate in supervision, training, and team meetings; seek clarification on policies or incidents when required.
  • Foster teamwork and uphold anti-racism and community development principles within the program.
  • Maintain ongoing education and training as directed; represent the unit on internal committees when assigned.

Requirements

  • PSW Certification (required).
  • Commitment to a client-centered, culturally competent approach that ensures high-quality personal care.
  • Strong understanding of supporting clients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (iADLs).
  • Knowledge of behavioral management techniques and strategies for responsive care.
  • Familiarity with gerontology issues, as well as health care and social service systems.
  • Strong communication skills—verbal, written, listening, and reporting.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
  • Flexibility and sound judgment in assessing and responding to client needs.
  • Knowledge of behavioral management techniques and approaches.
  • Understanding of gerontology issues, health care, and social service systems.
  • Commitment to maintaining personal and program environment hygiene.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs is required.
