About the Role
L3Harris Stress engineers review and interpret mechanical environmental conditions to develop internal loads for equipment sizing. They ensure designs meet program requirements and pass qualification testing through hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Responsibilities include analyzing structural and thermal loads on electronic assemblies, using CAD tools, supporting testing, and communicating analysis results.
Responsibilities
- Review and interpret mechanical environmental conditions from the statement of work and technical performance specification.
- Develop internal loads to size equipment based on external dynamic loads (acceleration, vibration, shock).
- Apply factors of safety and write yield and ultimate margins of safety.
- Consider temperature effects on material properties and strength allowables.
- Achieve a compliant design that meets all program environmental requirements.
- Conduct hand calculations based on strength of materials and structural mechanics theory.
- Employ Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using Ansys for structural dynamic analysis of complex geometry.
- Optimize geometry and meshes for FEA.
- Model multi-part assemblies considering interactions like contacts, joints, beams, or constraint equations.
- Analyze structural and thermal loads on electronic assemblies (Circuit Card Assemblies - CCAs).
- Write margins on structures and junction temperatures of electronic components.
- Use computer-aided solid modeling design tools to ensure as-designed geometry matches analyzed geometry.
- Interact with the integrated product development team.
- Support testing, including test setups, monitoring, and data analysis.
- Correlate analysis results to test results.
- Communicate analysis results through presentations and reports (PowerPoint or Word).
- Estimate time and schedule for assignments.
- Mentor junior engineers.
