About the Role
The Atlantic is seeking a senior editor for its Science and Health team to oversee staff writers and collaborate with editors to produce impactful stories that lead national conversations on scientific frontiers. This role is crucial for shaping coverage of life on Earth, its past, present, and future, and the forces that influence it, with potential focus areas including physics, biology, neuroscience, climate change, and geology.
Responsibilities
- Oversee staff writers.
- Work closely with other editors to produce stories.
- Assign magazine stories of the highest standard that speak to a wide audience.
- Edit fast-breaking scoops.
- Shape ideas-driven pieces.
- Oversee deeply reported projects.
Requirements
- Deep curiosity about science.
- Deep understanding of at least one area of scientific discovery.
- Adept at assigning magazine stories of the highest standard that speak to a wide audience.
- Narrative sophistication and a passion for big ideas are essential.
- At least 10 years of experience.
- Demonstrated ability to define the conversation around issues of national importance.
- Strong leadership abilities.
- Experience managing reporters.
- Excel at helping reporters see a story more clearly, pursue their most ambitious instincts, and turn out compelling writing.
- Unwavering commitment to excellence.
- Eagerness to work closely with others on the team.
- Must be able to work night, early-morning, and weekend hours at times.
- Successful completion of reference checks.
- Compliance with The Atlantic's COVID-19 vaccination policy.
