About the Role

Plans, manages, and oversees daily activities of the Biomedical Engineering Department to ensure effective use, maintenance, and repair of hospital medical equipment in accordance with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and established procedures.

Responsibilities

Plans, coordinates, and manages department operations to ensure timely and effective repair, calibration, and maintenance of center-wide medical equipment.
Develops, formalizes, and implements procedures and methods for testing and calibrating medical equipment.
Monitors and oversees department activities to ensure effective maintenance and emergency repair of medical devices.
Directs and oversees departmental personnel to ensure effective staffing, work allocation and coordination.
Completes performance evaluations and takes appropriate personnel actions.
Provides work direction and interprets/implements hospital personnel and departmental policies and procedures.
Designs and implements appropriate quality control and preventive maintenance programs.
Conducts follow-up to ensure effectiveness of department activities.
Investigates equipment-related accidents and safety hazards to determine cause and corrective or preventive measures.
Implements and maintains safety standards to ensure maximum protection for patients and employees.
Maintains effective communication with medical staff, administration, department heads, outside agencies, and appropriate others.
Coordinates activities with patient care and other Hospital departments to ensure timely and effective service delivery.
Addresses job-related inquiries and handles problems.
Participates on various Hospital-wide committees related to patient-care equipment, patient and employee safety, equipment standards and utilization, and facilities.
Identifies and submits departmental goals and objectives for approval and monitors progress.
Manages medical equipment installation programs and coordinates with the facilities department.
Oversees and coordinates with the purchase and maintenance of inventory of parts and supplies for the department.
Confers with vendors as necessary to negotiate or coordinate purchases.
Conducts pre-purchase engineering evaluation of various medical equipment to determine safety and reliability.
Makes appropriate recommendations to Hospital management.
Identifies and introduces labor-saving test equipment, tools, and methods.
Assists in the development of the departmental operating budget.
Monitors manpower and expense reports, investigates variances, and takes appropriate measures to ensure budget adherence.
Participates in a 24-hour on-call program.
Assists with developing, assessing, and implementing technology utilization and procurement programs.
Responsible for developing, implementing, and tracking department service standards and customer satisfaction benchmarks.
Develops and implements technology business plans for the entire organization including detailed financial models.
Works closely with Finance leadership to determine appropriate financing solutions.
Participates in the development and implementation of Corporate Technology policies and procedures.
Functions as the technology leader to ensure regulatory compliance.
Develops and implements technology management programs including Asset Management programs.
Manages corporate technology support budgets to optimize cost-benefit.
Develops, assesses, and implements technology utilization and procurement programs.
Develops and implements a strategic technology and medical equipment planning process.
Develops and implements technology assessment models for the assessment, procurement, system integration, life cycle management, and disposition of technology investments.
Maintains a network-wide inventory database of biomedical devices, interfaces, and information systems.
Uses inventory to establish a database for effective disposition of assets and to ensure safe and effective equipment use.
Reports on technology management activities to corporate committees and senior management.
Interacts regularly with all levels of management as required.
Responsible for the development and growth of the department’s Network Shared Services program.
Performs all duties inherent to a managerial role.
Participates in hiring, training, evaluation, and termination of assigned staff.
Performs other special projects and duties as assigned.

Requirements

Master’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or biomedical equipment or equivalent knowledge or education.
Previous experience as a clinical or biomedical engineer in testing and maintenance of all types of biomedical equipment.
At least ten years of related experience in healthcare technology management.
The last three years of experience should be in a senior leadership role.
Employees should live within a commutable distance to NYP.
