About the Role
The Caseworker is primarily responsible for providing case management and counseling services to identified youth and families. Responsibilities include advocacy, referral and linkage, group, individual and family counseling and crisis intervention.
Responsibilities
- Implement and coordinate services to children and their families having trouble in the home and/or in school, aimed at preventing placement of children outside the home and/or at improving academic performance.
- Provide intervention and support to families in crisis intended to keep the family unit intact.
- Complete all required documentation in a timely manner according to program standards.
- Assess children and families for risk, develop and implement service plans to address risk factors.
- Draft petitions and testify in Family Court as necessary.
- Provide Foster Care Services and locate placements when needed.
- Advocate on behalf of children and their families to ensure adequacy of services by providing linkage and coordination with county providers and agencies.
- Process and review intake of all referrals to the program.
- Provide services in a culturally competent manner, empowering clients by using their cultural strengths and informal support networks in service delivery.
- Maintain effective professional relationships with other service providers and community organizations.
- Identify and report on Untoward Incidents as required.
- Carry out Agency policies and procedures.
- Complete all necessary written reports, statistics, case files and summaries in a timely manner.
- Attend and participate in individual supervisory conferences, staff meetings, training sessions and professional development opportunities.
- Maintain required program certifications.
- Provide door-to-door transportation as required, ensuring the safety and welfare of passengers.
- Handle emergency situations which may require flexibility of time and area of assignment.
- Perform other duties, responsibilities and related tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and two (2) years' experience working in a school- and/or home-based setting providing services to individuals and/or groups.
- Experience working with families and their needs.
- Must have a valid New York State driver's license.
- Must have access to reliable transportation.
Skills
- Strong oral, written and public speaking communication skills.
- Strong problem solving, decision making and conflict resolution skills.
- High level of self-confidence and responsibility.
- Ability to work with complex systems (e.g., Probation, Family Court, Foster Care).
- Knowledge and/or experience with both the child welfare and juvenile justice systems.
- Ability to work independently and with flexibility in days and hours of work.
- Experience doing home-based work in a rural setting preferred.
