About the Role

We are seeking skilled engineers to design, build, and maintain the novel, high-performance systems of our serverless platform. You will focus on Modal's machines layer, managing the fleet of bare metal and cloud hosts, and the control plane for provisioning, imaging, monitoring, and repairing them. This includes automating the integration of new capacity, auditing and benchmarking hosts, maintaining machine images, configuring hardware components, and building automation for fleet health.

Responsibilities

  • Automate the integration of new capacity from hardware providers.
  • Audit and benchmark hosts and clusters.
  • Maintain machine images.
  • Configure GPUs, RDMA, networking, and storage.
  • Integrate machines into production.
  • Build automation for fleet health without human intervention.
  • Detect and resolve issues with GPUs, thermals, and disks.
  • Debug issues across hardware and software layers.
  • Respond to production incidents as part of the on-call rotation.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience writing high-quality production code.
  • Experience operating fleets of physical hardware (bare metal provisioning, BMC/IPMI, PXE or network boot, firmware) or building management control planes.
  • Strong cloud skills.
  • Strong knowledge of low-level operating system foundations (Linux kernel, drivers, networking, file systems, containers, etc.).
  • Effective at debugging across layers, from BGP flapping, Linux RPS, and vBIOS bugs to a Python control-plane service.
  • Willingness to participate in the on-call rotation and respond to production incidents.
