About the Role
The Senior Writer & Special Projects Officer (SPO) provides high-level communications support to the Office of the Vice-President & Provost (OVPP) on politically and culturally sensitive issues. This role involves preparing a variety of written materials, developing messaging for diverse audiences, and coordinating communications activities. The SPO also manages projects and initiatives within the OVPP, requiring knowledge of confidential information and strategic directions.
Responsibilities
- Prepare remarks, statements, letters, briefing notes, proposals, reports, policy papers, articles, quotes, scripts for Divisional events, newsletters, and speaking notes for interviews and greetings.
- Prepare messaging tailored to each intended audience, ensuring timeliness and effectiveness while considering the sensitivities of diverse stakeholder groups.
- Collaborate with internal communication teams and leadership to prepare integrated communications products on behalf of the Vice-President and the Division.
- Participate in the development of strategic communications plans and the coordination of communications activities within the OVPP.
- Manage project implementation in collaboration with senior university administrators to ensure the efficient and effective execution of the Provost's Office work.
- Coordinate, assist with, and advance projects and initiatives within the OVPP that involve confidential information regarding staffing, priorities, and new strategic directions.
- Interact knowledgeably and courteously with governors, senior administrators, faculty, staff, students, and community members, maintaining a professional image.
Requirements
- Minimum seven (7) years of progressively responsible senior experience in writing, editing, and communications.
- Extensive experience in a confidential executive office environment within a complex public sector setting.
- Demonstrated experience developing efficient records tracking and retention systems and bring-forward systems.
- Experience in developing and implementing written communication strategies and products.
- Excellent understanding of the University’s mission and its intersection with the broader community.
- Excellent knowledge of the post-secondary education sector and its issues.
- Ability to understand, articulate, and address issues of multiculturalism and cross-cultural intersections.
