About the Role

The Ultrasound Technologist performs or assists in ultrasound examinations, renders technical assistance to the Radiologist, and maintains and cares for all ultrasound equipment.

Responsibilities

Prepares and examines patients, verifying identity for ultrasound examinations in accordance with established departmental procedures and techniques, including obtaining health status and medical history, and assessing patient cooperation or ability to tolerate the examination.
Confirms that the ultrasound examination correlates with patient clinical history and presentation.
Informs the physician in charge of any contraindications to the procedure.
Operates and adjusts ultrasound equipment, cleans and makes minor adjustments, taking necessary safety precautions to protect patients and personnel from electric shock or other hazards.
Reports any equipment malfunction to the appropriate person.
Communicates with the patient, their representative, and staff.
Explains the exam and instructions to the patient and other healthcare providers, answering questions unrelated to specific diagnostic, treatment, and/or prognosis.
Develops and/or modifies a procedure plan from health status and medical history and appropriate considerations.
Uses independent professional judgment to adopt the procedure plan to optimize exam results.
Performs exams under general or direct physician supervision as defined by the procedure, adjusting scanning technique to optimize image quality and spectral waveform characteristics.
Analyzes sonographic findings to obtain comprehensive exams sufficient for a physician to direct patient management and render a diagnosis.
Performs measurements and calculations according to laboratory and ACR protocols and guidelines.
Minimizes patient exposure to acoustic energy without compromising exam quality or completeness.
Notifies the appropriate healthcare provider when immediate medical attention is needed.
Evaluates patient's status prior to discharge from the ultrasound department.
Records diagnostic images and data for use by the interpreting physician in rendering a diagnosis and for archival purposes.
Provides an oral summary of preliminary findings to the radiologist.
Ensures adequate supplies are available for use.
Helps maintain a clean and safe working environment.
Assists in the orientation and mentoring of new Ultrasound personnel.
May answer telephones, schedule examinations, and initiate transportation.

Requirements

Successful completion of one specialty examination within 75 days from date of hire.
Successful completion of an accredited ultrasound / sonography technical training program (as determined by MSHS) within 4 months of accepting this offer.
Successful completion of the MSHS hiring process.
Commencing work within 14 days of graduation.
Successful completion of ARDMS Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination prior to your date of hire.
