About the Role

The Maintenance Assistant provides essential maintenance services to the campus community, ensuring a clean and safe working environment. This role involves performing semi-skilled maintenance activities, operating various tools and machinery, and assisting with the upkeep of campus facilities and equipment.

Responsibilities

Perform semi-skilled maintenance activities including repairing doors, windows, stairs, railings, furniture, and door hardware.
Operate hand and power tools, and shop machinery to fabricate items like bookcases, shelves, and tables.
Operate State vehicles for parcel transport and transfers between mailroom locations.
Operate vehicles and forklift/electric jacks for placement of supplies and furniture.
Follow departmental guidelines, work rules, and safety procedures, wearing appropriate safety equipment.
Perform routine maintenance and repair/replacement of Residence Hall appliances.
Perform routine maintenance of laundry equipment, including pipe cutting, fitting, threading, and unclogging stoppages.
Perform routine inspections of electrical systems, testing outlets for proper voltage, grounding, and polarity.
Utilize electrical testing equipment to identify and troubleshoot faulty outlets.
Repair and lubricate casters on racks and carts.
Supervise work crews of student workers by making assignments and giving instructions.
Maintain departmental vehicles and schedule service appointments.
Perform manual work associated with the routine maintenance and cleaning of the warehouse.
Provide occasional assistance with snow and ice control.
Perform other duties or projects as assigned.

Requirements

Possess a valid NYS Driver’s License.
Maintain a motor vehicle record free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
Able to perform physical tasks such as bending, lifting, stretching, and climbing.
Able to work in confined spaces and at heights over ten feet.
Must successfully clear a background investigation.
Must provide proof of relevant experience or training/education upon conditional offer.
Must be prepared to document proof of qualifications with the application.
Must be able to perform the physical and supervisory aspects of the position.
Out-of-State Applicants: Must provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer and obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of the official start date.

Skills

Knowledge of and ability to use required hand and power tools.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Computer literacy with email, Google Office applications, and department-specific database with barcode scanning technology.
Ability to cut, fit, and thread pipe.
Ability to locate and unclog stoppages.
Ability to use electrical testing equipment.
Ability to use appropriate grease guns and can lubricants.

Experience Level

Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson
OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course
OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses

Education Level

Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course
Completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program (includes 288 hours trade-specific instruction, 45 hours technical math, 45 hours technical communications, 15 hours blueprint/schematic reading)

Salary/Compensations

Hiring Rate $44,560
Location pay of $4,150 per year
