About the Role
LifeWorks of Austin, TX is seeking a High School Equivalency (HSE) Instructor to develop, plan, and implement curriculum and educational activities for students in both online and in-person settings. The role involves providing various student services, including intakes, progress assessments, and interactive activities to prepare students for the GED. Instruction utilizes diverse methods to cater to different learning styles and ensure individualized progress monitoring.
Responsibilities
- Teaches content and skills in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science daily to students in person or virtually.
- Utilizes various methods to promote learning, including classroom instruction, group discussion, one-on-one guidance, computerized instruction, experiential activities, and field trips.
- Applies de-escalation techniques to reduce tension and promote safety.
- Develops, revises, and evaluates curriculum to meet diverse student needs across multiple subjects.
- Creates an effective learning environment with functional displays and an orderly work area.
- Meets individually with new students to complete intake paperwork and transition plans, including post-GED goals.
- Develops and updates individualized transition plans with students to support vocational, workforce, or higher education goals.
- Establishes and maintains student behavior standards for an orderly, inclusive, and welcoming classroom.
- Plans and facilitates regular orientation sessions, collaborating with internal and external service providers.
- Administers and evaluates baseline and progress educational assessments for all students.
- Coordinates instructional time with volunteer tutors and interns.
- Meets with clients individually at least monthly to monitor service plans and foster a safe learning relationship.
- Processes new referrals and facilitates enrollment, including assistance with obtaining identification and making referrals.
- Maintains timely, complete, and accurate data entry as required.
- Provides primary supervision of students during services and activities.
- Prepares for and actively participates in supervision and other required meetings or trainings.
- Maintains up-to-date continuing professional development.
- Meets with LifeWorks staff regularly to provide coordinated wrap-around services for shared clients.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bilingual in English and Spanish required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, or a related field; and minimum of 2 years of teaching experience with transition age youth; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with databases.
- Proficient level experience with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Preferred experience with group facilitation and management methods and techniques.
- Preferred experience presenting educational information to young adults from diverse backgrounds and communities.
- Texas Educator Certification required.
- May be required to possess or be able to obtain a valid driver's license within 30 days of start date and provide proof of valid insurance.
- Must possess or be able to obtain Standard First-Aid and Infant, Child, and Adult CPR Certification within 6 months of start date.
