About the Role

The Assistant Teacher is responsible for supervising and caring for children in compliance with New York State Office of Children and Family Services regulations and NAEYC recommendations. This role supports the early childhood curriculum and child care program, while providing effective customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and care for children according to state regulations and NAEYC recommendations.
  • Support staff in implementing the early childhood curriculum and child care program.
  • Provide effective customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Interact positively, respectfully, and responsively with children.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, cheerful, and motivating learning environment.
  • Help maintain a neat, clean, and orderly classroom with stimulating learning centers.
  • Assist in supervising children during all activities, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Serve as a primary caregiver for assigned children and families.
  • Contribute to the planning of classroom activities and center events.
  • Assist in the preparation, care, and stocking of classroom materials.
  • Assist children with personal care needs, including toileting, diapering, feeding, and comforting.
  • Observe and record child growth and development using the center's approved system.
  • Build trusting relationships with parents through open communication.
  • Communicate positively with parents by name.
  • Make classroom information available to parents.
  • Participate in parent involvement and engagement activities.
  • Address parent concerns tactfully and professionally in collaboration with the teacher.
  • Work cooperatively with other classroom staff, the Center Director, and administrative staff.
  • Assist new and substitute staff assigned to the classroom.
  • Guide the activities of student staff and field workers in the absence of the teacher.
  • Share information about classroom or child-related issues with supervisors and staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and in-service programs.
  • Seek professional growth and development, participating in at least 15 hours of ECE training annually.
  • Maintain a personal ASPIRE Professional Development listing.
  • Receive and maintain Pediatric First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Be supportive of the Center and its administration.
  • Maintain a positive work climate and professional image.
  • Assume duties of the lead teacher in their absence.
  • Follow daily schedules and routines.
  • Adhere to Center policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Assist with required record-keeping.
  • Be responsible for a group of children without assistance at times.
  • Follow all licensing regulations.
  • Report for work on time and consistently.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Child Development Associate (CDA) or 12 credits in early childhood education required, or must be obtained within one year of employment.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • One year of experience with young children is required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Completed job application form.
  • Minimum of three references (personal and professional).
  • Official transcript of college grades.
  • Must be able to pass a physical exam.
  • Must be able to pass NYS Central Registry Clearance.
  • Must be able to pass NYS Justice Center SEL clearance.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal conviction check (Comprehensive OCFS Background check).

Skills

  • Knowledge of NYS child care regulations.
  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices and age-appropriate activities aligned with NAEYC guidelines.
  • Effective and tactful oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with children, co-workers, and parents.
  • Ability to use constructive methods for maintaining group control and individual behaviors.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and tact.

  • Ability to lift 40 lbs. from floor to a waist-high table, 20-30 times per day.
  • Ability to reach a child 20-30 feet away within 30 seconds.
  • Ability to crouch to a child's height, maintain eye contact at the child's level, and sit on the floor for extended periods.
  • Strong sense of responsibility.
