About the Role

This internship offers a rewarding learning experience for law students with a focus on appellate advocacy. Interns will work with intensity and focus to advance the goals of the Legal Advocacy Department, contributing to cutting-edge impact litigation and policy change.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to litigation at the Department level and/or within one of the Department’s issue-based programs.
• Work on projects at various stages of litigation, including investigating, developing, and initiating affirmative cases.
• Draft pleadings, motions, and briefs.
• Participate in strategy meetings with other ACLU staff and coalition partners.
• Attend monthly department meetings where prospective litigation and policies strategy are discussed.
• Potentially work across the Department’s three broad issue areas: Criminal Law & Immigration and Democracy, Speech & Technology.

Requirements

• Currently attending law school.
• Demonstrate a passion for and a commitment to work for social justice and the ideals of the ACLU.
• Applicants must include a Cover Letter, Resume, and Writing Sample in PDF format.
• Cover Letter must include a brief statement about why you want to work on the particular Program/Issue Area you’ve applied for.
• Cover Letter must include your preference and willingness to be based in each of our three office locations for the summer (San Francisco, Sacramento, and Fresno).
• Cover Letter must include how you encountered the internship opening.
• Applications from undergraduate students are not considered.
