About the Role

Performs diagnostic procedures for the isolation and identification of microbial pathogens from clinical specimens, maintaining in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, instrumentation, and physiological conditions affecting test results. Conducts special projects, evaluates new products and instrumentation, and performs quality control measures.

Responsibilities

• Performs and reports assigned analytical tests, including high complexity tests on biological specimens, in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner in compliance with documented laboratory procedures.
• Determines acceptability of specimens by performing visual inspections or by recognizing abnormal/unusual results, documenting unacceptable specimens, and communicating specimen requirements.
• Maintains QA policies and procedures to ensure validity of results, recognizing factors that affect measurements and results, and performing quality control for all testing.
• Maintains a safe and efficient working environment by performing equipment checks, cleaning work area, and monitoring temperatures; recognizes and troubleshoots malfunctions of advanced technological equipment.
• Enters test results into the Laboratory Information System for standardized report generation.
• Maintains all records as per regulatory requirements, including card files, patient requisitions, LIS documentation, and statistical data.
• Consults with the Supervisor or the Pathologist on important, conflicting, or out-of-range results, and notes inadequate volume and/or abnormal appearance of samples.
• Reviews all Critical Test results by repeat analysis if necessary, communicates them to Nursing Staff/Physician, notifies Supervisor/Pathologist in extreme cases, and enters communication details in LIS.
• Assists in Inventory Control to assure adequate supplies and proper storage of reagents.
• Participates in other projects/duties as assigned by the Supervisor/Lab Management.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related Science field required
• NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License required
• 0-1 year of experience
