About the Role
EAC Network is seeking a dedicated part-time Civic Engagement Specialist to join the Civic Engagement Program. This role focuses on delivering nonpartisan voter education and civic participation services to individuals in custody within NYC Department of Correction facilities, promoting civic awareness and engagement prior to community reentry.
Responsibilities
- Provide in-custody, nonpartisan voter education regarding eligibility to vote under New York State law.
- Assist eligible individuals with completing voter registration forms and absentee ballot applications.
- Facilitate voter registration drives in coordination with facility staff.
- Conduct civic engagement workshops and educational sessions.
- Maintain strict neutrality and compliance with election laws.
- Investigate and recommend supportive services for clients.
- Submit completed voter registration and absentee ballot forms according to procedures.
- Utilize the DOC program tracking database for accurate and timely data recording.
- Maintain sign-in sheets and attendance documentation.
- Comply with all NYCDOC security clearance procedures, volunteer trainings, and background check requirements.
- Work exclusively from DOC-approved computer terminals and follow all facility security protocols.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School diploma or educational equivalent required.
- Demonstrated experience assisting individuals with voter registration strongly preferred.
- Experience working in correctional or secure settings preferred.
- Strong knowledge of New York State voting eligibility laws preferred.
- Ability to explain civic processes in a clear, nonpartisan, and accessible manner.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to engage respectfully with justice-involved individuals.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and database entry systems.
- Ability to comply with institutional security requirements and maintain professional boundaries.
- Ability to travel to and from housing areas throughout multiple DOC facilities, including walking between locations.
