About the Role
Join Gerber Gear's New Product Development team in Portland, Oregon, as a Product Engineer. You will bring innovative consumer products from concept to production, combining mechanical engineering expertise, prototyping, problem-solving, and collaboration to turn ideas into reliable products.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop innovative consumer products from concept through production.
- Create 3D CAD models using SolidWorks or similar CAD systems.
- Develop concepts and mechanical designs balancing performance, manufacturability, cost, and user needs.
- Build and evaluate prototypes to validate designs and identify improvement opportunities.
- Develop technical specification and drawing packages, including GD&T, performance specifications, and test procedures.
- Evaluate off-tool samples and support first article approval and release.
- Deliver production-ready products meeting quality, performance, cost, and timing expectations.
- Research, design, analyze, and implement engineering projects using established procedures and best practices.
- Review design proposals, specifications, regulations, and other technical requirements.
- Complete engineering drawings and product specifications.
- Analyze designs and recommend solutions to technical challenges.
- Ensure products and systems meet customer and product requirements.
- Manage multiple projects of varying scope and complexity while maintaining timelines and priorities.
- Partner closely with Product, Design, Marketing, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Quality, and other cross-functional teams.
- Communicate project information clearly across departments and facilitate reviews and decision-making.
- Review supplier designs and provide technical feedback.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal teams and external partners.
- Keep project stakeholders informed of progress, risks, and significant issues.
- Create and maintain accurate technical documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
- Ensure project documentation is complete, current, and appropriately controlled.
- Understand intellectual property and patents and support navigation of the patent process.
- Assist with product safety requirements and compliance.
- Support the team in identifying and resolving technical and product development challenges.
- Take on special projects and other responsibilities as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, plus 3+ years of relevant experience in consumer product design, mechanical engineering, or a similar field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and engineering concepts.
- Experience supporting or managing engineering projects from concept through implementation.
- Experience with 3D CAD; SolidWorks experience preferred.
- Experience designing and developing consumer products preferred.
- Consumer goods or outdoor industry experience preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to understand and interpret complex mechanical concepts and technical information.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing processes, product structures, costing, and document control.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across functions and with external partners.
- Excellent organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Curiosity, initiative, and a practical, hands-on approach to solving problems.
- An interest in outdoor gear, tools, and products designed for real-world use.
