About the Role

Precision Neuroscience is developing a next-generation brain-computer interface (BCI) to aid individuals with neurological conditions. Our initial product, Layer 7, aims to enable people with severe paralysis to control digital devices using their thoughts. We are seeking a Staff Neuroscientist, Neural Biomarkers to establish and validate biomarkers from human cortical recordings, building a robust program around them. This founding scientist role involves study design, statistical analysis planning, data analysis, and representing scientific findings to partners. As the program expands, the role will include hiring and leading a team.

Responsibilities

  • Design prospective human studies within the constraints of intraoperative recording.
  • Author a statistical analysis plan for each study before data collection begins.
  • Identify and handle confounds inherent to intraoperative data.
  • Distinguish exploratory from confirmatory findings in all reporting.
  • Define data collection requirements for biomarker hypotheses.
  • Perform full analysis from raw high-density cortical recordings to reported results.
  • Develop candidate biomarkers from recordings and characterize their time course.
  • Establish measurement properties as a prerequisite to claims of drug effect.
  • Select and apply statistical methods, report effect sizes, and test robustness.
  • Implement analyses as versioned, tested, reproducible code.
  • Serve as Precision’s scientific representative to pharmaceutical and biotechnology partners.
  • Evaluate therapeutic program fit for an electrophysiological biomarker approach.
  • Represent the strength and limits of the evidence accurately.
  • Develop the evidentiary strategy for Precision’s biomarkers.
  • Act as the scientific bridge between clinical, machine learning, and product teams.
  • Publish and present externally, and author technical reports for partners.
  • Hire and mentor scientists and analysts on the biomarker program.

Requirements

  • PhD in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, biostatistics, clinical pharmacology, or a closely related quantitative field.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a human research program.
  • Advanced statistics knowledge.
  • Hands-on experience analyzing human neural time-series data.
  • Strong coding skills in Python, including fluency with modern AI coding tools.
  • Biomarker development experience in a biopharmaceutical context.
  • Working knowledge of CNS drug development.
  • Strong scientific communication skills.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, small datasets, and fast iteration.

Skills

  • Intracranial or scalp electrophysiology (ECoG, stereo-EEG, LFP, or quantitative EEG) strongly preferred.
  • Modern AI coding tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code).
  • Maintainable, tested code contribution.
  • AI-assisted engineering environment.
  • Pharmacodynamic, response, or target engagement biomarkers.
  • Early-phase study design.
  • Exploratory endpoints.
  • Go/no-go decision making.
  • Scientific communication.
  • Credibility and composure.
  • Ambiguity.
  • Small datasets.
  • Fast iteration.
