About the Role
As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will lead and support a variety of geotechnical projects from planning through execution, providing technical expertise, project coordination, and client support. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will perform engineering assessments, develop practical solutions for complex site conditions, mentor junior staff, and contribute to business growth while ensuring high-quality service delivery and technical excellence.
Responsibilities
- Mentoring, training and supervising of junior field staff
- Ensuring assigned employees are trained in and maintain company procedures, health & safety protocols, and programs
- Continue the ongoing development of our geotechnical team through supporting and encouraging technical upgrading and providing direction and mentorship on complex issues and field investigations
- Support business development through client communication, relationship building with key stakeholders, and identification of new geotechnical service opportunities
- Scheduling assessments and meetings with clients/contractors
- Assigning work to field staff as appropriate depending on workloads and in conjunction with the Operations Manager
- Preparing contract documents, proposals, and reports
- Providing clients with advice on appropriate regulations and guidelines
- Manage and/or review projects from the proposal stage through to completion, including allocation of budgets, personnel and resources, billing and client relationships
- Maintain technical proficiency, including participation in professional practice groups and organizations
- Participate in the preparation and presentation of training programs
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee of complex geotechnical site investigations
- Complete and/or review geotechnical engineering analyses related to soil and rock conditions, slope stability, seepage, settlement, pavement design, earthworks, retaining structures, and shallow and deep foundation systems
- Provide technical direction during construction, including review of field observations, resolution of site issues, and preparation of practical recommendations for clients and project teams
- Lead the preparation and technical review of geotechnical reports, proposal documents, design recommendations, letters, and construction support documentation
- Building strong relationships with management of the geotechnical and other Pinchin service lines, including finding opportunities for partnership between the services
- Support with accounts receivables as required
- Review of cost estimates/proposals for potential clients
Requirements
- University degree in Geotechnical, Civil or Geological Engineering or related degree and experience
- A Professional Engineering Designation in Ontario or be eligible to register with Professional Engineers Ontario
- Demonstrated experience with geotechnical design and analysis for foundations, settlement, slope stability, retaining structures, earthworks, pavements, and construction related geotechnical issues
- Working knowledge of Ontario based standards, regulations, and guidelines related to geotechnical engineering, construction materials, and municipal or transportation projects
- Experience preparing and reviewing technical reports, proposals, cost estimates, and client correspondence
- Able to work closely with our project teams across the company where geotechnical support may be of assistance, such as Environmental Due Diligence and Remediation and Building Sciences
- Can demonstrate that you are well organized and shows initiative
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to project sites across Ontario as required
- Some positions may involve online testing during the recruitment process
- Depending on the assignment, clients may require Government security screening, criminal record verification, or periodic drug and alcohol testing
- Preference may be given to candidates who are able to efficiently qualify for Government security clearances
- Verification of background information over the previous five years including Canadian residency
Skills
- Excellent leadership and business development skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Proficiency with geotechnical engineering software (slope stability, seepage, finite element programs, etc.)
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to proactively respond to clients on time sensitive items
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, clients and managers
