About the Role
NRC Norway is seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer for a 12-month maternity cover position. This role is crucial for building and optimizing data infrastructure to transform complex data into actionable insights. You will design and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL processes within Microsoft Fabric, manage data lakes and warehouses, and ensure data accessibility, reliability, and security. You will also provide guidance on alternative data solutions when Microsoft Fabric is not optimal. Collaborating with various stakeholders, you will translate business needs into data solutions, enhance data quality and governance, and promote modern engineering practices, automation, and innovation. Responsibilities
- Ensure data is accessible and optimized for organizational use.
- Collaborate with program managers and field staff to understand data needs and align data systems with operational goals.
- Provide technical leadership, support, and guidance to non-technical teams on data processing and infrastructure.
- Implement data governance best practices, ensuring compliance with regulations and ethical standards.
- Comply with NRC policies, guidance, and procedures.
- Build data pipelines in Fabric to integrate internal and external data based on existing best practices, meeting data needs from SPK, operational departments, and field operations.
- Contribute to the design and continuous improvement of the Fabric environment, supporting secure data sharing.
- Develop infrastructure, governance, and standards to improve data discoverability and accessibility.
- Build and evaluate systems and data pipelines on Microsoft infrastructure (Azure, Power Apps) for use cases outside Fabric's scope, such as archiving and system integrations.
- Architect data infrastructure inside and outside Fabric for optimal performance and to meet large-scale data requirements.
- Proactively implement data validation, monitoring, and error-handling processes to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and integrity.
Requirements
- Proven experience with IT projects.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or related fields, or equivalent demonstrable expertise.
- Advanced analytical skills and a problem-solving attitude.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work with geographically distributed teams and non-technical colleagues.
- Capability to operate in an Agile environment.
- Fluency in written and spoken English; other languages are an asset.
- Proactive in staying updated with industry trends and innovation.
- 5+ years of experience shipping and maintaining code in production.
- Experience working with Microsoft Fabric or other Microsoft reporting tools.
- Experience or deep understanding of data architecture and data modeling.
- Solid programming knowledge in Python.
- Familiarity with API design and security fundamentals.
- Familiarity with basic DevOps is a plus.
- In-depth knowledge and comfort working with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and non-relational data (JSON format), including building, optimizing, debugging, and creating queries and safe migration scripts.
- Familiarity with enterprise information systems, especially ERP and CRM, is desirable.
