About the Role
Base is building a distributed network of batteries to transform the electricity grid. This role will own the end-to-end network architecture for Distributed Compute networks, including site connectivity, backhaul, fleet-wide overlay, and node interconnects. The position involves standardizing the per-site network stack for rapid deployment and leading fiber and carrier strategy.
Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end network architecture for Distributed Compute networks.
- Standardize the per-site network stack for rapid site deployment.
- Lead fiber and carrier strategy for the fleet.
- Evaluate dark fiber vs. lit services and build vs. lease decisions.
- Select topologies that scale with site density.
- Manage carrier/ISP selection, circuit ordering, and failover.
- Build and operate the fleet overlay and its automation.
- Establish secure site-to-site and site-to-cloud connectivity.
- Automate configuration generation, zero-touch provisioning, and monitoring.
- Instrument, secure, and support the network in practice.
- Track network performance metrics.
- Define segmentation between compute, battery control, and management planes.
- Manage certificate management and audit-ready access controls.
- Support initial site installations and bring-ups, reducing on-site involvement as processes mature.
Requirements
- 5+ years running production networks
- Deep, hands-on routing and switching experience (BGP, OSPF, VLANs, VRFs)
- Experience with site-to-site connectivity at scale (SD-WAN or overlay networks)
- Familiarity with fiber networks and topologies
- Experience procuring and managing circuits with carriers
- Comfort working in the field at utility sites
