About the Role
The Assistant Transportation Specialist (ATS) will support projects related to citywide traffic programs and assist in the preparation of transportation and traffic studies within the Manhattan Borough Engineering office.
Responsibilities
- Conduct field investigations and surveys to evaluate traffic conditions, safety, visibility, access, circulation, crash patterns, traffic volumes, and pedestrian and vehicular operations.
- Assist in studies related to traffic signal installations, signal timing modifications, pavement markings, signage, loading zones, and other traffic control devices.
- Review accident reports and observe accident locations.
- Analyze traffic flow patterns and evaluate operational changes, such as converting two-way streets to one-way operations.
- Recommend methods to improve traffic safety and reduce congestion and crashes.
- Prepare detailed reports, diagrams, and sketches documenting field conditions and study findings.
- Assist in the preparation of work orders.
- Monitor the installation, modification, or removal of traffic control devices for compliance.
- Assist higher-level staff in analyzing traffic volume counts and evaluating the operational performance of street and transportation facilities.
- Work collaboratively and inclusively, fostering professional growth and maintaining effective communication with all stakeholders.
Requirements
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, planning or mathematics or one of the physical sciences.
- High school diploma or its educational equivalent and 4 years of full-time experience performing technical work on traffic programs and citywide transportation studies.
- Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.
