About the Role
The Cataloguer in the Film Department at The Museum of Modern Art will work with various teams to ensure the accuracy and standards of film and media assets within the collection management system.
Responsibilities
- Cleans and mines data within the Museum’s collection management system.
- Creates, populates, and edits records related to digital collection material in consultation with the Media Conservation team.
- Creates and adjusts records and metadata to identify titles for MoMA’s streaming platform, in alignment with Digital Content and Media Conservation teams.
- Catalogues new acquisitions and enters information for Museum archival records, updating records when changes occur.
- Identifies gaps in information, reviews existing files, updates the Museum’s database, and performs necessary follow-up.
- Maintains policies and procedures for cataloging film material in The Museum System (‘TMS’).
- Maintains standards for motion picture cataloging.
- Performs other duties reasonably related to the functions described.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and three years of prior experience with film and media collection cataloging or equivalent.
- General knowledge of motion picture film history.
- Knowledge of relational databases, data entry standards, digital media assets, and data processing.
- Knowledge of fundamental concepts of digital preservation.
- Good familiarity with digital image, audio, video, and text file formats.
- Knowledge and experience with computing environments (Mac, Windows, Unix/Linux), working in the command line and with command line tools (e.g., Mediainfo, Exiftool).
- Familiarity with The Museum System (‘TMS’) and/or other databases tailored for moving image material cataloging.
- Highly motivated, results-oriented, analytical, and organized.
- Accurate data entry is a must.
- Ability to collaborate and balance concurrent short- and long-term projects.
- On-site presence is required five days a week.
