About the Role
Develop and sustain the long-term technology architecture strategy for the Financial Times, aligning technology investments, platforms, and capabilities with business priorities. This strategic role focuses on technology strategy, governance, and portfolio oversight, rather than individual system design.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the enterprise technology strategy, target-state architecture, and associated roadmaps.
- Maintain a company-wide perspective on technology platforms, products, services, and capabilities.
- Evaluate major initiatives and investments in relation to enterprise architecture principles and strategic goals.
- Simplify, modernise, and rationalise the technology estate to reduce duplication, technical debt, and operational complexity.
- Define and uphold enterprise architecture principles, standards, and governance processes.
- Chair architecture review forums and guide strategic technology decision-making.
- Transform business priorities into technology capability roadmaps.
- Offer architectural direction for key organisational, platform, and technology transformation projects.
- Provide strategic oversight of technology lifecycles, platform strategy, and major technology suppliers.
- Ensure technology risks, dependencies, and architectural trade-offs are acknowledged and addressed.
- Serve as a consultant to the CTO and Technology Senior Leadership Team regarding technology strategy and investment decisions.
- Build strong relationships across Product, Engineering, Data, and Delivery functions to create alignment.
- Advocate for long-term thinking while balancing delivery and operational needs.
- Foster a culture of simplicity, collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Significant experience in Enterprise Architecture, Technology Strategy, Chief Architecture, or a comparable senior architecture role within a complex digital organisation.
- Proven track record of developing enterprise technology strategies, target-state architectures, and transformation roadmaps.
- Experience influencing technology decisions across multiple teams, products, domains, and collaborators without direct authority.
- Experience clarifying and managing complex technology portfolios while balancing strategic objectives with delivery and operational realities.
- Strong understanding of cloud platforms, SaaS ecosystems, enterprise integration patterns, and modern software delivery practices.
- Ability to evaluate technology investments and platform choices from both technical and business perspectives.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to make complex concepts clear and relevant to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Critical thinking combined with a pragmatic approach to delivery constraints and operational needs.
- Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills across organisational and functional boundaries.
