About the Role
Obtains venous blood samples via venipuncture/skin puncture and collects non-blood samples from patients of all ages using proper technique. Accurately performs laboratory order entry into the hospital information system. Performs point-of-care testing in select locations.
Responsibilities
- Collects a high volume of blood specimens (skin puncture and venipuncture), nasal and throat swabs and other non-blood specimens using appropriate technique while maintaining specimen integrity.
- Utilizes systems for identification, collection, transport and disposal of specimens, adhering to internal and external policies and regulations.
- Performs order entry transcription for laboratory tests in the outpatient setting.
- Explains and administers Advance Beneficiary Notices to Medicare patients when an order service fails medical necessity.
- Ensures all required elements are included on laboratory requisitions for compliance.
- Verifies accuracy of all paper and/or electronic orders prior to specimen collection.
- Organizes and prioritizes work to provide optimal patient care while adhering to established guidelines for specimen procurement, safety and correct identification.
- Recognizes and evaluates complications in blood collection and selects appropriate solutions.
- Performs all duties precisely and efficiently under continually changing conditions.
- Instructs patients who require special testing and instructs outpatients in proper specimen collection for testing.
- Responsible for proper care and use of hospital equipment including Vocera, hand-held collection devices, printers, lab vehicles, carts and POCT instrumentation.
- Collects specimens and performs select Point of Care testing.
- Drives hospital or personal vehicle to service patients requiring blood work at homes, Group Homes and skilled nursing facilities.
- Collects blood and transports blood and all specimen types to the laboratory.
- Adheres to all safety procedures in the handling of hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens.
- Follows all procedures on safe patient interactions and body mechanics.
- Maintains clean, well-stocked work areas.
- Meets performance expectations for Customer Service, Teamwork, Resource Utilization, and Staff and Self Development.
- Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
Requirements
- High School diploma.
- Previous phlebotomy experience and/or phlebotomy certification required.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required.
Skills
- ASCP certification preferred.
Education Level
- Formal education and/or clinical training from an approved phlebotomy program preferred.
