About the Role

The Superintendent is responsible for the daily operation of a job site, including scheduling, production, and procurement of materials, manpower, and equipment. This role supervises all direct labor positions and manages contracted work on assigned projects to ensure successful completion.

Responsibilities

  • Studies specifications to plan construction procedures based on timelines, staffing, tools, equipment, and building methods.
  • Interacts with the Project Manager to determine and develop project schedules, utilizing 'look ahead' schedules to track progress and identify potential issues.
  • Coordinates pre-construction meetings with the Project Manager before mobilization.
  • Directs the procurement of tools and materials to meet work schedules.
  • Ensures all parties are informed of construction issues and progress through meetings with supervisory personnel, craft personnel, subcontractors, and clients.
  • Works with supervisory personnel and labor representatives to resolve workforce complaints and grievances.
  • Confers with supervisory, engineering personnel, inspectors, and suppliers to resolve construction problems and improve methods.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure conformity with specifications and schedules.
  • Manages the project based on progress reports, materials used, and costs, adjusting schedules as needed.
  • Works with the Manager of Craft Resources to manage personnel movement between projects, minimizing hiring and layoffs, and managing labor costs.
  • Works in conjunction with the project manager in preparing the Project Management Plan.
  • Ensures consistent implementation of company policies, including safety, equal opportunity, quality standards, and housekeeping.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in construction management or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in ground-up commercial projects, particularly in the light industrial and/or cold storage sector.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction processes.
  • Possesses a valid driver's license.
  • Understands and applies building codes and design requirements correctly.
  • Reads blueprints accurately.
  • Good understanding and knowledge of subcontractors' scopes of work and tolerances.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good administrative skills: monitors work activities, informs others of progress and problems.
  • Good management skills: effectively monitors and supervises subordinates and follows up on delegated assignments.
  • Maintains integrity: adheres to ethical standards, conduct, and organizational policies.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability: formulates alternative solutions by finding relationships between data from different sources.
  • Team player: works well with others and helps co-workers, customers, and subcontractors achieve goals.
  • Maintains good interpersonal relationships: uses tact and is sensitive to the feelings and needs of others.

  • Ability to operate office equipment (fax, copier, telephone).
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing software.
