About the Role

Education Through Music is a non-profit organization that partners with New York City Public Schools to place music teachers and programs back into school’s curricula. We provide a bridge for teachers who are not certified to teach in public schools, build their program, and eventually be hired by a public school for the DOE. ETM has great reach in that we serve all five boroughs, we have partnerships with 50 public schools and provide music education to over 18,000 children. Music is a part of a well rounded education; it is essential for students' social and emotional well being and a critical tool for establishing equity and success. We are looking for teachers who are passionate about music and making a difference in their communities.

Responsibilities

Leading and teaching assigned classes.
Assisting with school-wide concerts, including rehearsals and conducting.
Assisting with concert logistics such as sound, lighting, and staging.
Managing student behavior to maintain an optimal learning environment.
Recording student progress toward learning goals based on ETM benchmarks.
Assisting with the creation and maintenance of a visually engaging and print-rich music classroom.
Reinforcing classroom procedures and routines.
Participating in ETM music teacher professional development training sessions.
Proactively pursuing professional development by utilizing and applying ETM content, concepts, and resources.
Committing to growing as a music teacher to be culturally responsive.
Maintaining timely, responsive, and constructive communication with ETM and school staff.
Creating and maintaining a portfolio with a weekly observation journal and unit plan.
Assisting Mentor Teacher with record-keeping and instrument inventory if supporting Ensembles.
Leading pullout lessons and ensemble rehearsals if supporting Ensembles.
Undergoing fingerprinting and background check by the NYC DOE PETS system if not currently holding 'eligible' status for classroom teaching.

Requirements

Must work a minimum of 10 hours and up to a maximum of 13 hours a week for approximately 12-14 weeks.
Interns will not receive pay for days not worked during school holidays.
Scheduling must remain consistent for the entire semester, with at least 2.5 hours minimum at the school on each visit.
Must be able to work within the school’s music schedule.
Bachelor's Degree in a Music/Arts or Related Field.
1 year of teaching experience or student teaching experience.
Ability to model quality singing in front of children.
Sound musical knowledge.
Knowledge of musical pedagogy practices.
Advanced musical notation and theory literacy.
Ability to walk up several flights of stairs.
Ability to lift up to 15lbs of equipment.
Master’s in Music Education or Related Field (Preferred).
2 years teaching groups of children in a classroom setting (Preferred).
Advanced vocal or instrumental performance capabilities, particularly guitar, piano, or voice (Preferred).
Conducting experience (Preferred).
Must be authorized to work in The United States without requiring sponsorship.
