About the Role
The Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking food that meets DOHMH and HASA guidelines and tenant-specific dietary needs. This role involves maintaining a sanitary and safe kitchen environment compliant with federal and state health department standards for food storage, handling, and preparation, as well as managing routine record-keeping duties such as menu planning and tracking meals served.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook food meeting DOHMH and HASA guidelines and tenant-specific dietary needs.
- Maintain a sanitary and safe kitchen environment compliant with federal and state health department standards.
- Ensure proper food storage, handling, and preparation.
- Maintain routine record-keeping duties, including menus and records of meals served.
- Ensure all food ordered and prepared meets DOHMH and HASA nutritional standards.
- Set aside and label HASA meals as per protocol.
- Ensure meals for Community Residences are prepared and sent as scheduled.
- Report all safety hazards, kitchen equipment malfunctions, and pest concerns immediately.
Requirements
- Have an understanding, appreciation, and commitment to the philosophy and mission of Community Access.
- Possess a New York City Department of Health Food Handler’s certificate.
- Have five years minimum experience working in a kitchen setting as a cook.
- Previous supervisory experience preferred.
- Previous customer experience preferred.
- Skilled in conflict mediation/negotiation with an assertive approach to problem-solving.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Creative and flexible.
- Ability to utilize various computer programs.
- Ability to show initiative and be responsible for follow-through.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Must be fingerprinted and cleared through a background clearance process.
- Bilingual Spanish-speaking preferred.
- Ability to speak other relevant languages, dependent on specific needs of program participants.
