About the Role
The Chief Deputy Adult Probation Officer (CDAPO) at the San Francisco Adult Probation Department (SFAPD) provides leadership to organize, plan, and manage the department's daily activities, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures. This role supports the Chief Probation Officer (CPO) in strategic planning, staff development, and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Formulates strategic plans for client rehabilitation and staff safety.
- Collaborates with various agencies, law enforcement, stakeholders, and community groups to develop and implement programs and services.
- Analyzes staffing and performance data to forecast and recommend improvements for equity and efficiency.
- Develops and trains staff, assisting the CPO in key division operations.
- Assists in preparing and controlling the annual budget for personnel and non-personnel services.
- Stays current with trends in leadership development, criminal justice design, technological advancements, and evidence-based practices.
- Ensures staff wellness, professional development, and engagement are prioritized.
- Promotes employee recognition and designs strategies for effective performance assessment and feedback.
- Oversees subordinate staff in managing data and producing reports on department operations.
- Directs the development and implementation of goals, initiatives, programs, policies, and strategic plans.
- Manages resource allocation and oversees service levels.
- Ensures grievance and discipline practices align with MOUs.
- Sets objectives and monitors subordinate staff performance.
- Assists in establishing departmental policies for personnel management.
- Oversees internal affairs and investigates citizen complaints.
- Represents the department in complaint resolution and recommends corrective actions.
- Consults with the Mayor and/or Board of Supervisors staff on behalf of the Chief when needed.
- Coordinates with other City departments to address service needs.
- Represents the Department before commissions, boards, committees, and media.
- Leads division directors and managers to discuss program problems and issues.
- Establishes project priorities and reviews management reports to monitor program status.
- Evaluates service levels and performance standards.
- Advises staff on current developments, personnel matters, and policy or procedural changes.
- Willingness to work non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends.
- May be required to be armed.
Requirements
- Possession of a Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Criminology, Corrections, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or a closely related field, i.e. Juris Doctorate (JD).
- Five (5) years of full-time supervisory experience in field services, institutional work, or related special programs in a California County Probation Department or California Corrections Facility, government agency, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Criminology, Corrections, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, a JD, or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of the required general supervisory experience.
- Must meet all minimum standards for Peace Officer under Section 1031 of the Government code.
- Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident eligible for and who has applied for citizenship.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose a criminal record.
- Must be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
- Must be a high school graduate, pass the General Education Development Test or other high school equivalency test approved by the State Department of Education that indicates high school graduation level, pass the California High School Proficiency Examination, or have attained a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited college or university.
- Completion of any state mandated trainings to meet the requirements of being a sworn officer must be completed within one year after hire date.
- Must pass POST law enforcement background investigation.
- A psychological examination will be required prior to appointment.
- Conviction of a felony or of a crime that would have been a felony if committed in California is a bar to employment as a peace officer.
