About the Role
Powerline Technician Apprentices (PLT) work with Journeyperson Powerline Technicians to install and inspect electrical distribution facilities, drive and operate line trucks, and perform other duties. This role is ideal for new Apprentices registered with an applicable Provincial Apprenticeship program or those looking to continue their journey towards their Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate.
Responsibilities
- Work with a Journeyperson Powerline Technician and gain hours towards obtaining Journeyperson Certificate
- Climb and work from heights and parallel to energized circuits
- Maintain poles, towers and guy wires
- Splice, solder and insulate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution networks
- Open and close switches and install grounding devices to lines and equipment
- May climb poles and/or ride in bucket to install or repair wires, arms, insulators or other hardware on poles
- Install and repair underground facilities such as cable, transformers, potheads and pedestals
- Install pole hardware and auxiliary equipment such as transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses and insulators, using hand tools and mechanical devices
- May cover energized lines with rubber goods to facilitate safe handling of high-voltage lines without interrupting service
- Use insulated poles (hot sticks) fitted with mechanically or hydraulically operated grasping and crimping tools and/or rubber gloves and sleeves to perform energized line work
Requirements
- Must be enrolled as a Powerline Technician Apprentice with the Ontario Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission
- Valid Driver’s License and ability to provide an acceptable Drivers Abstract
- Willingness to work away from home and work a variety of shifts
- Knowledge of trade safety practices, procedures and safety requirements
- This project will be a unionized worksite. Candidates must be willing to join Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW)
- Candidates must reside locally or within a reasonable commuting distance
- Applicants must have legal authorization to work in Canada with no restrictions
