About the Role
The Lead Machine Operator provides day-to-day technical leadership and work coordination for machine operation and fabrication activities while performing advanced production work. This position serves as the primary technical resource for assigned operators and supports machine setup, troubleshooting, workflow, training, quality, and safe manufacturing practices. The Lead Machine Operator may also operate CNC equipment and perform basic CNC programming or adjustments.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate day-to-day machine shop or fabrication activities based on established production priorities.
- Provide technical direction and assistance to Machine Operator I, II, and III employees.
- Independently set up and operate fabrication and production equipment, including press brakes, drilling or manual machining equipment, plasma cutting equipment, and related machinery.
- Set up and operate applicable CNC equipment.
- Perform basic CNC programming, program edits, offsets, and operating adjustments within established authorization and process requirements.
- Interpret complex manufacturing drawings, dimensions, tolerances, work instructions, routers, and fabrication specifications.
- Determine appropriate machine setups, tooling, work-holding, and operating sequences for established manufacturing processes.
- Troubleshoot machine, tooling, setup, fabrication, and process issues and coordinate support from Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, or management when required.
- Perform or verify first-piece and in-process inspections using appropriate measuring and inspection equipment.
- Assist in evaluating manufacturability and identifying opportunities to improve fabrication methods, workflow, setup time, safety, quality, and productivity.
- Train and cross-train employees on approved machine operations, fabrication processes, work instructions, and safe work practices.
- Reinforce compliance with established safety, quality, and manufacturing requirements and elevate concerns to the appropriate Supervisor or Manager.
- Assist with workload coordination, job assignments, material flow, and production priorities as directed by management.
- Communicate equipment, material, staffing, quality, and production concerns to management.
- Ensure required production, inspection, material, and traceability documentation is completed accurately.
- Perform and coordinate routine operator-level equipment care and preventive maintenance activities.
- Support fabrication, assembly, and other manufacturing activities as operational needs require.
- Maintain an organized and safe work environment.
- Follow all applicable safety, quality, environmental, and manufacturing procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical or vocational education in machining, welding, fabrication, manufacturing technology, or a related discipline preferred.
- Significant progressive experience in machining, fabrication, CNC operation, welding, or related manufacturing operations required.
- Previous experience providing technical leadership, training, or work direction preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Us Citizenship required.
- Must be able to commute to Owego, NY.
- Prolonged standing, walking, bending, reaching, and repetitive movement for periods up to 8 hours.
- Requires visual acuity and manual dexterity.
- Must be able to lift at least 10lbs frequently; up to 35lbs occasionally, and heavier weights with assistance.
- Must be able to wear required safety protective equipment including safety shoes and glasses.

Skills
- Advanced knowledge of machining, metal fabrication, and manufacturing processes.
- Demonstrated proficiency setting up, operating, and troubleshooting multiple types of fabrication equipment.
- Working knowledge of CNC machine operation and basic programming or program adjustment.
- Advanced ability to interpret manufacturing drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and technical specifications.
- Proficiency with applicable precision measuring and inspection equipment.
- Strong mechanical and practical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to organize and coordinate the daily work of multiple employees.
- Ability to train employees and communicate technical information effectively.
- Ability to identify production, safety, equipment, and quality problems and escalate them appropriately.
- Ability to work collaboratively with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and other departments.
- Ability to balance production requirements with safety and quality expectations.
