About the Role
The SAP Finance Domain Architect serves as Talan’s functional authority for SAP finance processes and plays a central role in developing new business opportunities, with up to 50% of the role dedicated to presales activities. The role covers the Finance value chain and translates business requirements into SAP Finance solutions, acting as a design authority for active engagements.
Responsibilities
- Dedicate up to 50% of working time to presales activities, including opportunity qualification, discovery workshops, and client presentations.
- Design SAP Finance solutions, prepare estimates, and contribute to commercial proposals in partnership with Sales and Delivery teams.
- Develop reusable demonstrations, accelerators, and offerings that support practice growth.
- Provide deep functional expertise to shape solutions by distinguishing standard capabilities, genuine gaps, and the choice among configuration, extension, or process change.
- Lead Finance workstreams in digital discovery and readiness assessments, then present recommendations, estimates, assumptions, and trade-offs in workshops, proposals, and oral presentations.
- Assess the financial implications of adjacent process designs, including revenue recognition, intercompany activity, inventory valuation, fixed assets, and period close.
- Define and uphold the functional architecture for Finance, including universal journal, the SAP S/4HANA data model, consolidation, planning, costing, margin analysis, asset accounting, project systems, and treasury touchpoints.
- Configure and prototype complex scenarios when design decisions cannot be settled on paper, then confirm the end-to-end behaviour of postings, master data, and interfaces.
- Advise clients on IFRS and statutory requirements in Canada and the United States and on where tax engines and e-invoicing belong in the solution.
- Review and approve functional designs, specifications for reports, interfaces, enhancements, forms, and workflows, and the domain’s critical test strategies and scripts.
- Support defect analysis during system integration, user acceptance, and regression testing, then resolve domain escalations through cutover, hypercare, and transition into AMS.
- Guide data migration and cutover decisions, including opening balances, open items, and master-data quality thresholds.
- Act as the Finance design authority across multiple concurrent engagements and serve as the quality gate before deliverables reach clients.
- Coach functional consultants through design reviews, contribute to interviews and onboarding, and identify the capabilities the practice must develop, train, or hire.
- Track the SAP roadmap for the domain and brief the practice on changes that affect the standard approach, clean core, and cloud solutions.
- Create and maintain reusable process models, configuration accelerators, demo environments and scripts, guides, and design patterns for presales and delivery.
- Capture engagement lessons and patterns in practice intellectual property and contribute domain content to AI-enabled delivery tools and the internal knowledge base.
Requirements
- At least twelve (12) years of SAP experience, including at least ten (10) years of hands-on configuration in Finance, with a track record as the domain escalation point.
- Participation in at least four (4) SAP S/4HANA projects on current releases, including at least one greenfield implementation or selective transition where the candidate owned domain design.
- Demonstrated experience in opportunity qualification, discovery sessions, solution design, estimates, commercial proposals, demonstrations, and client presentations.
- Ability to balance client requirements, business value, solution feasibility, and delivery risk.
- At least three (3) years reviewing and approving other people’s functional designs, with demonstrated experience supporting multiple concurrent engagements.
- Expertise in universal journal and the SAP S/4HANA Finance data model, Group Reporting or a comparable consolidation tool, SAP Analytics Cloud Planning, product costing, and margin analysis.
- Hands-on experience with asset accounting, project systems, capital project accounting, and integration points involving revenue recognition, intercompany activity, inventory valuation, fixed assets, and period close.
- Working knowledge of IFRS and local statutory requirements in Canada and the United States and of the integration of tax engines and e-invoicing.
- Working credibility in at least two of Mining, Oil and Gas, Consumer Packaged Goods, and Industrial Manufacturing.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Canada-based role with client travel across North America, representing approximately 20% to 40% of working time.
- Good oral and written communication skills in English, to communicate with clients located across North America.
- Exposure to asset-intensive capital accounting or to Consumer Packaged Goods trade spend and deduction accounting.
- Consulting experience with a Big Four firm or SAP partner, experience building reusable accelerators, and experience with SAP public cloud and clean-core constraints.
- Exposure to Central Finance, SAP Datasphere, or SAP Business Data Cloud.
- SAP S/4HANA certification in Financial Accounting or Management Accounting; SAP Group Reporting or SAP Analytics Cloud Planning certification preferred; CPA, CMA, or equivalent designation considered an asset.
