About the Role
The Director, Technology Services will develop and lead the technology strategy planning efforts for the IT department, ensuring IT programs align with Faculty of Information objectives. This role involves leading the IT team, managing IT capital budgets, defining metrics, and ensuring the integrity, reliability, security, and performance of information systems. The Director will plan, implement, and sustain a comprehensive information and technology environment, providing creative leadership and strategic direction for various technology services including instructional design, help desk, web, classroom media, audiovisual services, research technology support, AI-enabled services, and emerging technology initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Develop and lead technology strategy planning efforts for the IT department.
- Ensure IT programs and initiatives align with Faculty of Information objectives and strategies.
- Lead the IT team.
- Manage IT annual capital budgets.
- Define metrics based on overall Faculty objectives.
- Ensure the integrity, reliability, security, and performance of information systems.
- Plan, implement, and sustain a comprehensive information and technology environment.
- Provide creative leadership and strategic direction in technology services.
- Oversee instructional design, help desk, information technology, web, classroom media, and audiovisual services.
- Support research technology, AI-enabled services, and emerging technology initiatives.
- Develop and execute short-term and long-term technology strategies.
- Manage Faculty administrative information systems and the Faculty’s use of University enterprise administrative information systems.
- Manage related staff and resources.
- Direct the development and execution of an information security plan.
- Protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the Faculty’s data.
- Collaborate with Faculty leadership and institutional partners on security.
- Establish IT departmental goals, objectives, and operating procedures.
- Set IT standards and technologies to meet a changing technological landscape.
- Advise on the appropriate response to external factors affecting technology services.
- Serve as the Faculty’s administrative computing representative for University-wide committees.
- Work closely with central offices to leverage enterprise technology platforms and infrastructure.
- Ensure Faculty-specific technology needs are met.
- Develop sustainable service models that support Faculty strategic priorities and long-term financial sustainability.
- Balance enterprise services with specialized Faculty-level services.
- Understand and appreciate the Faculty’s academic and research programs.
- Understand student participation in Faculty programs.
- Understand the administration of the Faculty’s business functions.
- Interface with visitors and the public.
- Consult with faculty, senior management, and others to understand needs and resources.
- Promote a service-oriented approach within the team.
- Set and implement service standards and key performance indicators.
- Focus on continual improvement and innovation.
- Build teams and solutions effectively.
- Develop and communicate the status of technology plans and initiatives.
- Promote and deliver quality service to faculty, staff, and students.
Requirements
- University degree in computer science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Seven or more years of progressive responsibility in information systems and technology.
- Demonstrated technical knowledge/skills in client/server environments, internet/intranet technologies, and data/internet security, preferably in a University environment.
- Experience in policy formulation.

- Experience with web-enabled database systems.
- Experience in management of daily operations.
- Experience in end-user support.

- Minimum of five years of management experience in a unionized environment.
