About the Role
The Field Engineer / Specialist (FS) – RSSOM will oversee the construction of the Step-up Substation (SUSS) and/or Operations, Maintenance and Service Facility (OMSF) for the Ontario Line transit project. This role involves managing interfaces with active rail corridors, stakeholders, and city authorities, ensuring compliance with technical requirements, safety, and quality standards in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Monitor contractor activities to ensure compliance with project technical requirements.
- Ensure safety is the primary consideration in all work delivery.
- Review contractor documentation, including risk assessments, method statements, and inspection and test plans.
- Attend necessary inspections of the works on behalf of Metrolinx.
- Monitor contractor assurance activities and resolution of non-conforming items.
- Assist construction superintendents and contractors in planning construction methods and procedures.
- Coordinate and resolve engineering or construction problems with superintendents and contractors.
- Interpret design engineering drawings.
- Review design drawings, vendor and contractor drawings, and installation instructions, and study interface problems.
- Provide daily quantities tracking for commodities reporting.
- Review field change notices/requests, extra work orders, and back charge notices.
- Implement project controls tools on the construction site.
- Assist in the preparation of cost estimates and review project design and engineering bills of materials for completeness.
- Prepare and maintain daily reports.
- Review updated contractor schedules, as assigned.
- Provide input to constructability and lessons learned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent field experience.
- Minimum 5–7 years of relevant experience in infrastructure or transit construction.
- Experience in construction supervision or field engineering roles on large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with RSSOM systems including traction power, signaling, communications, and rolling stock integration is an asset.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and quality standards.
- Strong focus on safety.
- Proficiency in interpreting architectural and engineering drawings.
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in MS Office and Bluebeam; experience with AutoCAD and Navisworks is preferred.
- Awareness of environmental compliance and industry quality standards.
- Successful clearance of applicable pre-employment checks (Criminal Background/Police Information check, Drug & Alcohol test, Reference checks, Provincial Driver’s Abstract).
