About the Role
This position supports research on small molecule modulators of ion transporters/channels relevant to kidney diseases, digestive disorders, pulmonary diseases, and cardiovascular diseases.
Responsibilities
- Perform in vitro electrophysiology in cells and tissues (Ussing Chamber).
- Conduct cell culture, including maintaining and preparing cell lines for experiments.
- Measure ion transport in cells using fluorescence and a plate reader.
- Prepare buffers and solutions for experiments.
- Perform molecular biology techniques such as PCR, animal genotyping, and Western blot.
- Execute staining techniques for tissues and cells, including immunofluorescence and light microscopy.
- Conduct animal experiments, including handling, anesthesia, injections, sample collection, colony maintenance, breeding, euthanasia, tissue harvesting, and simple surgery.
- Analyze ions, biomarkers, chemical compounds, and metabolites using ion chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
- Manage animal safety and compliance, controlled substances, and biological substances.
- Ensure protocol adherence and timely renewal/updating of animal protocols.
- Coordinate with IACUC.
- Determine, organize, store, and use experimental supplies.
- Assist with material transfers and safe shipping.
- Perform shared general lab maintenance duties, including freezer defrosting, hood and incubator cleaning, and inventory organization.
- Attend weekly laboratory meetings, unless in direct conflict with research.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- BA/BS in a related science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with animal handling, genotyping, breeding, and colony maintenance.
- Ability to work independently and assess the need for interaction with the supervising researcher.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
- Careful attention to detail.
- Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook of daily experiments.
