About the Role
The Geotechnical Field Technician supports geotechnical investigations, field testing, and monitoring activities under the direction of a Senior Geotechnical Engineer. The role involves gathering subsurface information, performing testing and inspections, and documenting site conditions on various projects, providing a foundation for a career in geotechnical engineering, construction inspection, materials testing, and infrastructure consulting.
Responsibilities
- Assist with geotechnical subsurface investigations including borehole drilling, test pits, soil sampling, and groundwater monitoring
- Coordinate drilling and utility clearance activities
- Log soil and rock samples under the direction of geotechnical engineers
- Monitor and document field investigations and site conditions
- Install and monitor groundwater observation wells and piezometers
- Collect soil, rock, aggregate, asphalt, and groundwater samples for laboratory testing
- Prepare factual reports, summaries, data sheets or graphs for interpretation of test results by the supervisor
- Consistently execute safe work practices and work plans while completing field, laboratory and office work
- Handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy to maintain positive working relationships
- Maintain records of health and safety information, calibration certificates, equipment manuals and applicable standards
- Travel out of town for extended periods to remote areas to fulfill field work responsibilities
- Apply and promote Englobe's health and safety rules
Requirements
- Technical Diploma in a field related to Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering
- 3 to 5 years of geotechnical, materials testing, or construction inspection experience
- Previous experience with drilling programs, earthworks inspection, or laboratory testing is considered an asset
- Experience working on transportation, municipal, or infrastructure projects is preferred
- Understanding of soil classification and basic geotechnical principles
- Ability to read engineering drawings and specifications
- Familiarity with field testing procedures and documentation requirements
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 25 kg
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain and active construction sites
- Occasional overtime, early morning, evening, and weekend work based on project requirements
- Must have a valid Ontario G Driver's License
- Demonstrated interest and sensitivity towards occupational health and safety
