About the Role
The deputy big read editor role is an exciting opportunity at the FT to shape and work on agenda-setting journalism. The Big Read is a key feature addressing important reader issues with authority and innovation, collaborating deeply with visual storytelling and investigations teams.
Responsibilities
- Generate ideas for feature stories reflecting FT priorities, ensuring each piece has a clear angle, new fact, point, and purpose.
- Consider storytelling formats beyond traditional text.
- Conduct rigorous, deadline-driven edits of longform pieces, collaborating with writers to ensure sparkling and legally sound copy.
- Lead the Big Read desk in the editor's absence and represent the team in news conferences and meetings.
- Develop and manage special projects showcasing FT journalism.
- Collaborate with the visual storytelling team and other desks.
Requirements
- Possess a strong news instinct and the ability to identify compelling Big Read topics.
- Demonstrate proven ability and flair in editing longform pieces across various topics including tech, business, finance, science, and economics.
- Exhibit confidence in discussing and debating ideas with senior editors and writers.
- Skilled in refining story pitches and reducing content to its essential, memorable elements.
- Possess the diplomacy to work effectively with reporters, correspondents, and editors across different desks.
- Skilled in managing the Big Read team and developing junior talent.
- Aptitude for visual storytelling and creative use of graphics.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and pressure.
- Must refrain from using AI in test submissions; all written materials should reflect genuine knowledge, skills, and experiences.
- AI may be used as a tool for research and interview readiness.
