About the Role

As Head of Engineering, you will own the engineering organization at ValPay, including its structure, delivery, and quality. Reporting to the CEO, you will collaborate with product and go-to-market leadership to transform a talented, lean team into a predictable, high-performing engineering function. This is a build role focused on establishing operating discipline, a reliable delivery rhythm, a strong management layer, and scalable technical standards.

Responsibilities

Own engineering delivery end to end, including planning, execution, release cadence, and quality, making it predictable for the business.
Build and lead the engineering management layer by hiring, developing, and coaching engineering managers, tech leads, and senior/staff engineers.
Partner with Product on roadmap feasibility, sequencing, and trade-offs, owning the 'how' and 'when'.
Set and enforce technical standards across the platform (architecture, code quality, testing, observability, documentation) to support scaling.
Serve as the senior technical escalation point for integrations with core payments partners, resolving complex issues.
Drive AI adoption within engineering for the SDLC, developer productivity, and product outcomes.
Own engineering operations and reliability, including on-call, incident response, postmortems, and PCI DSS Level 1 platform SLAs.
Partner with security and compliance to maintain PCI DSS certification and multi-jurisdiction obligations.
Act as a steady presence under pressure and build the team's organizational muscle for incident management.

Requirements

8+ years in software engineering, with 4+ years leading engineering teams, including managing managers or tech leads.
Proven experience building, structuring, and scaling technology organizations, ideally in high-growth environments.
Experience hiring and developing engineering leaders.
Ability to apply hands-on technical depth, review architecture, and participate in design reviews or incident resolutions.
Strong judgment on build-versus-buy, technical debt, and engineering capacity allocation, with the ability to explain these decisions in business terms.
Track record of installing delivery processes in fast-moving teams without sacrificing speed.
Demonstrable ambition and potential for growth into a CTO role.
