About the Role
Patient Observers are crucial for enhancing patient safety and reducing injuries by providing direct observation, re-orientation, reminders, and companionship to at-risk patients, supplementing nursing strategies and preventing the need for restraints.
Responsibilities
- Maintains a direct line of sight with patient at all times, including during family/visitor interactions and toileting/hygiene activities unless otherwise noted by licensed clinical staff.
- Accompanies patient and ensures safety during transportation, testing, and procedures outside the patient's normal environment.
- Establishes a safe, risk-free patient environment utilizing knowledge of fall prevention, infection control, and self-harm prevention protocols.
- Notifies clinical staff of any safety concerns, including potential means of self-harm, falls, and/or patient interference with medical devices.
- Monitors patient verbalizations and immediately informs the nurse if the patient expresses any intention to harm self or others.
- Floats to different patient care units.
- Creates clear, accurate documentation on patient status and activity during the shift.
- Participates as an active member of the health care team and positively promotes the team to patients, families, caregivers, and colleagues.
- Refers requests for assistance promptly to nursing staff via the call light/intercom system.
- Ensures patient dignity is preserved by maintaining coverage and adjusting curtains/doors for privacy.
- Functions effectively in different, stressful situations.
- Performs similar or related duties as requested.
Requirements
- High School or GED preferred.
- Previous experience caring for patients in a similar setting preferred.
- BLS Certification preferred.
- Light Work - Exerting up to 20 lbs of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- Occasional crouching, typing/clerical/dexterity, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, reaching, repetitive motion, stooping, walking.
- Frequent seeing/monitor/computer use, standing, talking.
- Constant hearing, pushing, visual acuity (color, depth, perception), fit testing.
- Occasional bodily fluids/bloodborne exposure, chemical, mechanical hazards.
- Occasional extreme temperatures, noise, fumes, mists, odors.
