About the Role
AbbVie is seeking a Director, Clinical Development AI Partnerships to identify, assess, and progress partnership opportunities within the AI and life sciences innovation ecosystem. This role focuses on AI-enabled capabilities to enhance clinical trial design, efficiency, quality, execution, evidence generation, and participant engagement. The successful candidate will be a builder comfortable with ambiguity, developing relationships, and converting opportunities into structured partnerships.
Responsibilities
- Monitor the AI and pharmaceutical innovation landscape for clinical development.
- Identify and evaluate potential partnering opportunities from AI startups, technology companies, and other relevant organizations.
- Lead structured assessments of external opportunities with cross-functional teams.
- Manage partner interactions, diligence workstreams, and synthesize input for senior leaders.
- Design and coordinate pilots, benchmarks, and technical evaluations of AI models.
- Track active assessments, partner interactions, and communicate progress and risks to stakeholders.
- Support the development of partnership structures, term sheets, and negotiation strategies.
- Build and maintain relationships with external partners and ecosystem participants.
- Align internal stakeholders on opportunity fit, value potential, and decision criteria.
- Develop reusable approaches for Clinical Development AI external innovation, including diligence templates and pilot design principles.
Requirements
- 10+ years of relevant experience in clinical development, AI strategy, business development, or related life sciences technology roles.
- Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, medicine, pharmacy, engineering, computer science, data science, business, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated ability to understand clinical development workflows and pain points.
- Working knowledge of AI/ML, generative AI, agentic AI, analytics, clinical technology, digital health, or data-enabled platforms.
- Experience contributing to external opportunity assessments, diligence, pilots, or partnerships.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a 0-to-1 environment.
- Highly organized and execution-oriented with strong project management skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and judgment.
- Experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology drug development is preferred.
- Experience at or advising AI-native startups, technology companies, or consulting firms is preferred.
- Experience designing or interpreting pilots, benchmarks, or technical evaluations for AI-enabled products is preferred.
- Familiarity with data, privacy, compliance, regulatory, and security considerations is preferred.
