About the Role

The Assistant Principal of Student Services directs and facilitates campus-based support for diverse learners, ensuring compliance with specialized services mandates and effective Tier 2 and Tier 3 instructional practices. This role involves managing the school-based Student Services Team and reporting to the campus Principal.

Responsibilities

  • Model a deep understanding of instructional best practices and command of Specially Designed Instruction.
  • Conduct regular classroom observations, live coaching, and provide feedback to teachers.
  • Plan, facilitate, and attend regular, mission-critical programming including leadership meetings, IEP meetings, and parent workshops.
  • Lead the development and implementation of best practices as the Special Education Inclusion Coordinator.
  • Engage in ongoing analysis of student data to inform strategy and instruction.
  • Create and facilitate weekly professional development sessions for staff.
  • Provide pull-out, push-in, small group, and one-on-one instruction, implementing strategies for differentiated instruction.
  • Provide coaching and observation for Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) Teachers, Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP), and Special Education Teacher Support Services (SETSS), Social Workers and Behavior Specialists.
  • Support principal with the interviewing, hiring and onboarding of new staff.
  • Craft and support facilitation of twice-yearly performance evaluation conversations.
  • Closely monitor and address staff professionalism, ensuring deadlines and responsibilities are met.
  • Conduct bi-weekly coaching meetings with teachers on caseload.
  • Coordinate, administer, and ensure compliance with NYSED regulations.
  • Craft and review IEPs to reflect student requirements and ambitions.
  • Oversee annual reviews and reevaluations and ensure timely reporting to agencies.
  • Monitor and report on the efficacy of the special education program.
  • Lead and facilitate special education meetings, interfacing with NYC DOE representatives.
  • Maintain compliance with all relevant laws and policies regarding student IEPs and 504s.
  • Coordinate with the Committee on Special Education (CSE) for securing and managing relevant service providers.
  • Manage the evaluation process, including classroom observations and testing, and advocate for classroom accommodations.
  • Model an achievement orientation & drive by setting ambitious goals and taking initiative.
  • Support principal in crafting and communicating strategic school systems, culture, and vision.
  • Seek and implement feedback from families, staff and scholars around school initiatives and improvement.
  • Create intentional experiences that foster joy, a love of learning, and a sense of belonging.
  • Work with leadership to design, model, facilitate, and hold others accountable to behavioral and academic processes and systems.
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism in execution of professional norms, attire and managing deliverables.
  • Support, and reinforce with staff, a welcoming and engaging culture of hospitality for every family.
  • Support and participate in family engagement initiatives.
  • Promptly and effectively respond to family concerns.
  • Support student recruitment, enrollment and retention as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Possession of current Special Education, ESL, or ELL teaching certification.
  • 3+ years of relevant urban, elementary, or middle teaching experience with demonstrated student results.
  • Administrative certification and 3+ years of leadership experience (preferred).
  • Spanish language proficiency (preferred).
