About the Role
The Wall Street Journal is seeking a researcher to join its Russia Bureau, tasked with providing readers with in-depth coverage of Russia during this significant period. This role requires tenacious and innovative reporting, a collaborative approach, and a deep understanding of economic data, corporate databases, and effective methods for identifying and contacting sources. The successful candidate will be adept at following reporting instructions and proposing new story angles, with a thorough grasp of the operations of the Russian government and its key security agencies. Researchers will demonstrate both skill and persistence in engaging with government officials and ordinary citizens within Russia.
Responsibilities
- Keep track of news inside Russia, Central Asia, the Caucasus and Eastern Europe.
- Assist in reporting on various story themes, including Kremlin policy, the war economy, escalating tensions with Europe, and shifting relations with China and other Asian neighbors.
- Analyze Russian corporate databases, government, and economic data.
- Identify and contact relevant government officials, experts, and ordinary Russians for interviews.
- Collaborate effectively with correspondents within the bureau and with various teams globally, including those in Washington, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
- Practice essential cyber hygiene to ensure the security of oneself, correspondents, and sources.
Requirements
- Experience working as a reporter, stringer, or researcher.
- Native Russian language proficiency.
- Fluent English.
- Experience in finding and working with economic data, corporate databases, and other open-source resources.
- Knowledge of government ministries, agencies, and security services.
- Proven ability to track down key individuals within ministries and agencies.
- Enthusiasm and willingness to dedicate time to finding ordinary individuals in Russia, even amidst increasing difficulties.
- Strong reporting instincts.
- An open mind and a strong sense of ethics.
