About the Role

The HSS Orthopedics Now program provides immediate access for patients 12 years and older with musculoskeletal injuries or sudden pain. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) will triage, diagnose, treat, and refer patients to the appropriate level of care in an expedited timeframe, working autonomously and in collaboration with HSS physicians.

Responsibilities

Triage, diagnose, treat, and refer patients to a higher level of care in an expedited timeframe.
See patients autonomously, in collaboration with, and with the support of HSS physicians.
Provide a full range of primary, acute, and specialty healthcare services.
Diagnose and treat acute musculoskeletal injuries including bone, joint, or muscle injuries, strains, sprains, minor dislocations, and closed fractures.
Treat painful, swollen, or injured joints, back and neck pain, and osteoarthritis.
Provide care for pediatric injuries (12 years of age and older) and sports injuries.
Perform steroid injections and joint aspirations.
Provide general bracing and splinting.
Demonstrates mastery of musculoskeletal assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
Performs accurate, comprehensive histories and physical exams.
Develops appropriate differential diagnoses and treatment plans.
Executes outpatient procedures (e.g., joint injections, aspirations, splinting, casting) within scope and with technical proficiency.
Orders, interprets, and integrates diagnostic studies into patient care.
Uses evidence-based practice to guide decisions and adapts to emerging best practices.
Provides compassionate, empathetic, and culturally sensitive care.
Effectively educates patients on diagnosis, treatment options, and self-care strategies.
Demonstrates commitment to patient safety, comfort, and privacy at all times.
Works seamlessly with physicians, nurses, therapists, and administrative staff to ensure coordinated, efficient patient care.
Contributes actively in interdisciplinary case discussions and care planning.

Requirements

Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree Physician Assistant Studies, Graduate of CAAHEP accredited Physician Assistant Training Program.
Nurse Practitioner: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Master’s degree in Nursing.
Physician Assistant: Active license in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey (preferred).
Physician Assistant: Current NCCPA certification, including 100 hours of continuing medical education logged every 2 years and recertification taken and successfully passed every 6-10 years.
Physician Assistant: Current Infection Control Certificate.
Physician Assistant: Completion of child abuse recognition course.
Physician Assistant: ACLS and BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
Physician Assistant: DEA license.
Nurse Practitioner: Active license in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey (preferred).
Nurse Practitioner: Board certification in relevant specialty area from an agency accredited by the American Board of Nursing Specialties (e.g., ANCC, AANP).
Nurse Practitioner: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) required.
Nurse Practitioner: ACLS and BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
Nurse Practitioner: DEA license.
At least 2 years in musculoskeletal/orthopedic practice.
Experience with injections, aspirations, and casting.
1-2 Years practicing in an outpatient or ambulatory setting (preferred).
Sports medicine and/or emergency medicine experience (preferred).
Maintains proper patient records.
Performs complete and accurate history and physical exams.
Utilizes evidence-based practice.
Committed to best practices; maintains clinical competency.

Located in an indoor area with frequent exposure to mild physical discomfort from dust, fumes, temperature, and noise.
Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and other potentially infectious materials.
