About the Role

This role is for someone who wants to build and own the risk, compliance, and legal framework, taking it to the next level of maturity through automation and scalability. The function is designed to enable growth, with a focus on operating within pre-agreed boundaries and ensuring compliant operations. The role reports to the COO with a direct line to the Board Risk Committee, offering genuine second-line independence and a clear path to a Chief Risk Officer position.

Responsibilities

  • Own and continue to uplift the risk, compliance, and legal framework.
  • Own and deepen the compliance obligations register, mapped across key legislation and regulatory guides.
  • Own the enterprise risk register and enhance its standardisation and tracking.
  • Own Skip’s risk appetite statement, ensuring clarity for business operations.
  • Design and run a rolling compliance monitoring and testing plan.
  • Own the compliance calendar and policy suite.
  • Oversee product governance, DDO, and target market determinations.
  • Own the reasonable steps obligation for distribution channels.
  • Integrate market feedback into reviews to drive improvements.
  • Participate early in the product development process to shape design.
  • Own the internal dispute resolution framework under RG 271.
  • Own AFCA membership obligations and data reporting.
  • Own hardship obligations and associated regulatory reporting.
  • Own the incident and breach register end-to-end.
  • Own and mature the operational risk framework.
  • Own the outsourcing and third-party register and risk assessment.
  • Own business continuity and disaster recovery planning and testing.
  • Meet operational risk expectations from ADI funders.
  • Own Skip’s AML/CTF program, including transition to reformed obligations and independent evaluation.
  • Own Skip’s Consumer Data Right position and requirements.
  • Own privacy compliance, including the Privacy Act and Australian Privacy Principles.
  • Own the contract register, template agreements, and a contracting playbook.
  • Select, brief, and manage external counsel, and own the legal budget.
  • Track conditions subsequent and ongoing obligations under funding and partnership agreements.
  • Escalate contentious or novel matters to external counsel.
  • Own the Risk Committee pack and risk reporting to the board.
  • Support the operation of the Risk Committee and track action registers.
  • Act as the point of contact for funder, rating agency, and auditor due diligence.
  • Automate compliance processes to scale sub-linearly with settlements.
  • Design and deliver role-based compliance training.
  • Serve as an accessible, trusted point of contact for concerns.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in risk, compliance, or financial services regulation, with experience within an Australian credit licensee.
  • Proven ownership of a compliance and risk framework.
  • Working knowledge of the NCCP Act and National Credit Code, relevant ASIC regulatory guides, the AML/CTF Act, and the Privacy Act as applied to a credit provider.
  • Experience in businesses with fewer than 150 people, understanding the limitations of bank-designed frameworks.
  • Experience identifying, assessing, and monitoring operational risks and controls.
  • Commercial judgment to differentiate between critical and minor risks.
  • Collaborative and pragmatic style to build trust with frontline teams.
  • Excellent written communication skills for board-level reporting.
