About the Role

This is a founding role for the first Forward Deployed Designer (FDD) at Artificial. You will establish and define the FDD function, operating model, patterns, and ways of working from scratch. You will also grow and manage the team, taking part in hiring subsequent FDDs and line-managing them. Your mandate is to ensure the right problems are solved before configuration begins, translating customer requests into actionable problems with platform-valid solutions and clear trade-offs.

Responsibilities

  • Establish the FDD function, defining the operating model, patterns, and ways of working.
  • Grow and manage the team, including hiring and line-managing subsequent FDDs.
  • Join customer + FDE sessions early for problem framing and discovery.
  • Translate requests into problems, identifying user behavior, platform-valid approaches, and recommendations with trade-offs.
  • Prototype and test ideas quickly using the most effective medium.
  • Provide credible pushback when proposed solutions do not address underlying problems.
  • Codify patterns and precedents to create shared team infrastructure.
  • Coach the FDE team to spread design capabilities.
  • Use workspace signals to surface risks early.

Requirements

  • Experience in enterprise/B2B software where design systems exist, problem framing and stakeholder navigation are key, and solutions must work within technical and organizational constraints.
  • Fluency in technical concepts, with comfort in reading and writing code using an in-house DSL.
  • Ability to reason about configurable systems and understand platform capabilities and limitations.
  • Experience managing designers, including line management of small teams (3-5 people) and prior hiring experience.
  • Insurance or Lloyd's experience is a plus but not required.
  • Collaborative skills with an emphasis on product quality.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in a distributed work environment.
  • Potential and raw talent are valued as much as experience.
