About the Role
At Artificial, there are three primary sources of documentation we maintain: Client-facing product documentation for insurance business users, internal documentation site built docs-as-code from the engineering repository, and public API documentation owned and authored by the Integrations team. The responsibilities below break down how each of these three sources are to be managed.
Responsibilities
- Own client-facing product documentation end-to-end: strategy, information architecture, standards, tooling, and content quality.
- Own the internal documentation gap backlog: proactively identify potential gaps, triage incoming reports, route them to the best-placed author, and chase completion.
- Write content for the internal documentation site where you are the best author.
- Steward the internal documentation site and public API documentation: set standards, information architecture, and editorial bar for content authored by engineering and integrations teams, and maintain publishing pipelines.
- Interview engineers about new features, demystifying them for non-technical readers.
- Act as editorial reviewer on documentation changes, catching duplication, misplacement, and unclear writing.
- Write and maintain high-value client-facing content: core product guides and release communications.
- Select, build, and run the documentation toolchain, including docs-as-code workflows.
- Design and operate AI-assisted authoring pipelines to raise quality and throughput without sacrificing accuracy.
- Build the contribution model: templates, style standards, and review processes for product managers and engineers to contribute content.
- Partner with the Integrations team on API documentation: raise the quality of guides and examples around auto-generated reference.
- Partner with product and customer-facing teams to ensure documentation ships with releases.
- Measure documentation effectiveness through usage, search behavior, support deflection, and client feedback, and act on findings.
- Set the standard for clear technical communication across the company.
Requirements
- 6+ years in technical writing, documentation engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrable experience producing end-user product documentation.
- Sufficient developer documentation experience to edit and improve API guides credibly.
- Hands-on experience owning documentation tooling, including docs-as-code workflows (e.g., Git-based authoring, static site generators, CI pipelines).
- A portfolio or writing samples demonstrating the ability to make complex technical material clear for both technical and non-technical readers.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, technological environment with flexibility.
- Confidence in reading and understanding code and pull requests to identify documentation needs.
- Experience building or substantially restructuring a documentation estate.
- Experience establishing contribution models where engineers and product managers write and you edit and curate.
- Practical experience using LLMs in documentation workflows.
- Familiarity with structured documentation frameworks such as Diataxis.
- Familiarity with OpenAPI specifications and generating reference documentation from source.
- Previous experience working in a scale-up environment.
- Background in InsurTech, FinTech, or other regulated-industry.
- Background checks may include criminal record check, credit history review, speaking with previous employers, and confirming academic qualifications.
