About the Role

Near Access Operations (NAO) is a specialized capability supporting complex and sensitive AFP investigations by deploying advanced technical solutions for law enforcement outcomes domestically and internationally. This role operates at the intersection of technology and operations, requiring team members to utilize and maintain specialist skills and equipment, conduct research, use AFP information systems for data interrogation and collation, and apply an understanding of AFP core business activities. NAO team members are responsible for deploying, maintaining, and adapting surveillance device technologies, procuring and modifying them for operational needs, and providing expert advice and training on advanced communications and surveillance capabilities.

Responsibilities

Utilizing and maintaining specialist skills and equipment
Undertaking project or research work to support AFP business
Using AFP information systems to interrogate, input, collate and retrieve data for operational support
Applying an understanding of AFP core business activities
Undertaking a range of operational support tasks
Maintaining currency and subject matter expertise through ongoing professional development and learning opportunities
Deploying, maintaining and adapting sophisticated surveillance device technologies
Procuring and modifying surveillance device technologies to support the safe and effective conduct of operations
Providing advice, guidance and training to regional operators on advanced communications technologies and surveillance device capabilities
Plan, coordinate and participate in operational support activities for AFP and partner agency operations
Engage and collaborate with AFP investigative teams to ensure effective operational alignment
Liaise with law enforcement and government partners to support cooperative policing outcomes
Build and maintain strong internal and external professional networks and collaborative working relationships
Use AFP information systems to analyse, input, collate, and retrieve operational data
Handle and record information accurately and appropriately, in accordance with AFP guidelines, best practice and procedural requirements
Manage competing priorities effectively and progress tasks in a timely and organised manner
Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and initiative in a dynamic and complex operational environment
Plan, coordinate and deliver training to uplift capability across Australia
Apply, or develop, an understanding of relevant legislation, particularly the Surveillance Devices Act 2004, Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979, and Telecommunications Act 1997
Achieve operational outcomes that support AFP priorities

Requirements

Must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application
Negative Vetting 2 (Top Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one
Formal qualifications or extensive experience in Defence Electronic Warfare or Signals Intelligence analysis
Formal qualifications or extensive experience in engineering from an Australian university, or equivalent, and practical experience in electrical, computer systems or telecommunications fields
Formal qualifications or extensive experience in operational experience, preferably with a background in technical or physical surveillance
In-depth knowledge of and/or experience with cellular communications and mobile communications networks
In-depth knowledge of and/or experience with the Internet of Things (IoT) and associated communications
In-depth knowledge of and/or experience with Wi-Fi protocols and interfaces
Contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role
Ability to work effectively as part of a high-performing team of dedicated professionals
Current driver’s license
Ability to quickly develop an understanding of complex and sophisticated technologies and their operating interfaces
Demonstrated ability to enhance commercial off-the-shelf technologies by modifying hardware and/or software to meet operational requirements
Use of force (UoF) qualifications; or the ability to obtain them
Experience with, or the ability to develop an understanding of, relevant legislation, particularly the Surveillance Devices Act 2004, Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979, and Telecommunications Act 1997
Complete an Employment Suitability Questionnaire (ESQ) and provide a traffic history check and proof of Australian citizenship
Have fingerprints taken if an offer of employment is made
Undertake mandatory drug testing for illicit drugs
Satisfactorily undertake a security clearance to the level specified for the position

$111,861.00 - 123,420.00
Core Composite of 22% in addition to their base salary
