About the Role

The Assistant Teacher will collaborate with the Lead Teacher to ensure the successful operation of a classroom for 15-20 children. This role involves implementing curriculum to achieve outcomes for children of all abilities and requires flexibility due to the evolving nature of the position during the initial two-year start-up phase.

Responsibilities

  • Implement a child-centered curriculum and learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement, and self-motivation for children of all abilities.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Teacher in preparing daily lesson plans and individualizing for children.
  • Collect daily anecdotes and write observations for children.
  • Assess children using Teaching Strategies Gold online three times a year.
  • Provide positive guidance and discipline to support children in acquiring readiness skills for kindergarten.
  • Encourage parent participation in staff-parent conferences and home visits to discuss child development and education.
  • Maintain regular contact with parents and complete appropriate documentation.
  • Direct developmental concerns to the Health, Nutrition and Disabilities Coordinator.
  • Request supplies as needed and participate in classroom/program inventory.
  • Analyze child outcomes on a classroom basis two to three times a year with the teaching team.
  • Collaborate with family advocates and coordinators to provide comprehensive services.
  • Participate in coaching opportunities and professional development training.
  • Lift 35 pounds.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to work with children and families with special developmental, social, or cultural needs.
  • Ability to maintain written records and manage time to ensure the completion of assigned work.
  • Ability to foster and maintain positive, professional relationships with participating families.
  • Basic computer literacy in email and Microsoft Office.
  • Obtain CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment.
  • Clearance through DOI Fingerprint Screening, NYS Central Registry, and Sex Offender Registry.
  • Pass 3 reference checks.
  • Pass a physical examination with updated TB test, Varicella, Tdap, and MMR.
  • Obtain Mandated Reporter training certificate (every 2 years).
  • Comply with agency policy regarding identification and reporting of child abuse and neglect.
  • Obtain First Aid/CPR and Preventive Infectious Diseases Certificate within the first year of employment.
  • Meet all employee health requirements in Article 47 (DOHMH) and Head Start Performance Standards.
